we get our allotment end of feb, its a virgin site and i believe it will have been skimmed and ploughed, as were the first lot released last year. we intend growing the ground taking / long time in, as we have a small veg plot at home(herbs etc) . so garlic seems fine , can i start some off now in pots and then transplant or do they not like that. is there anything else i cann start

Yes you can, pop them one to a module or put a few in pots. Just make sure they are outdoors over the next few weeks to take advantage of the cold weather which they need to split.

You can start onions off by seed now [mine went in a week ago] and I'll sow a few more in a few weeks; You can also start off broad beans and peas such as kelvedon wonder or other round peas for an earlier harvest. Start in modules and plant out in a few weeks once hardened off.

If you get as far down as this I just wanted to tell you that this subject was covered on Gardner's World a couple of weeks ago. They mentioned two types of bulb and I think one was shop bought. You can go to the BBC Gardening pages and trace back to the programme. It should be available. I have never managed to grow garlic but this time I have at least started at the right time of year, i.e. Oct/Nov, and it has been very cold.
