Old fashion carbon copy credit card machine?

I don’t know if this is the right forum,
But at work we have an on going dilemma,
Back in the day when you paid by credit card you used to
But your card onto a small device, carbon copy paper was put ontop
And the device had a swipe handle,

Does anyone know what these devices were called?

I don't know of any way of getting one but I would have to ask why do you need one? If you are already a merchant and can accept cards you would ask your supplier (presumably Visa, Mastercard or Amex through your bank) and they would get you one (probably at a cost). If you are not a merchant then you wouldn't be able to make use of the imprints anyway (at least not for their intended purpose). IIRC the machines remain the property of the issuer and the merchant simply rents them.

I used to use them here at work for processing our donations (work for a charity) now we have gone automated.

The only way you can have one is to register with something like Barclays Merchant Services. This will cost a certain fixed fee and then so much % per transaction, not the most cost effective way.

We have now moved to this http://www.iatsuk.ticketmaster.com/ it is much better far cheaper and you only pay for what you process.

As a non-profit org we are charged 3% per transaction, you can joint up but the forms are big. It takes around 60 days for the first payment to reach your account after that it runs on a perfect 30 day cycle.

No min or max transaction and it has an online secure customer database you build yourself.

  • Try ebay? They seem to have most stuff!! As for whether the lister has the right to sell, that's another question!
  • we always used to call them zim zam machines

I believe some providers used to refer to them as "zip zap" machines.

Intrigued I had a look on ebay and couldn't see any in the UK but ebay (US) has a whole category for them:
