Second line - move old number?

Hello, I'm looking for some advice.
I've been living at my house for just over 3 years, but will be moving in with my boyfriend shortly. I hope to rent my house out (but that's for another thread!). His property is a farm so the phone line is a business one. Mine is a residential line. What I would like to do is install a second phone line at his property, and then move my existing phone number to that new line. Is this possible?
The reason I want to keep my existing number is due to self employed work I do and it would cause minimum disruption / confusion if I could keep the same number. I also have a broadband contact with BT and would like to move this to the new property.
Thanks in advance for you replies.

I would phone up the phone provider at the new place and ask about installing a new line (that's one thing) and keeping the same number(that's another). If with BT, whether you can keep the same number used to depend on whether you were in the same "phone exchange" area. Not sure whether that is still the case. Broadband will be another question entirely.

Depending on where you live, having virgin installing a new line may be a lot cheaper than BT, but I wouldn't guess you'd be able to keep the number in that case.

Not sure about Broadband - all depends on
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Their is no problem in moving the BT Line and Broadband. Your probaly be charged a connection charge see: http://www2.bt.com/btPortal/application;JSESSIONID_btPortalWebApp=JgdjEOiBb6gjtEHDIOl1197co3QDOydM29AKNvNDaz8V8AQZboqE!-1984742160?origin=tm_con_hub_page.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.portlet.event&pageid=total_movers_con&portletid=total_movers_con&wfevent=event.tm_overview
as your BF is using existing line. (Additional costs may incur if extensive cabling work is required !)
If your moving within same exchange area moving your number should not be a problem.

You probably don't need a second line - if you just want to have both numbers ringing at the same location, sign up to BT's "Call Sign' service. This provides for 2 numbers on the same line (Plus BB) and there is a different ring tone to help identify which number is being called. The only caveat is when dialling out, only the primary number is displayed, and that the added number must be geographically compatible with the new exchange it is being switched to.

Call Sign is not always available and you cant choose a number.

Really? I must tell BT that as they happily consolidated two pf my pre-existing numbers. When the service launched they used special number ranges, but this requirement is now long gone. Providing the new exchange can handle the number (same area) there is no problem in making the request.

Yes why not tell them their website is wrong if you know better, for Business Call Sign they still say. "Call Sign is offered subject to availability of Call Sign numbers"

I've arranged for a new line to be installed at my new address, and for my number and broadband account to be moved to this new line. An engineer will be coming out in a few weeks to install the new line - seems quite straightforward, I just need to pay the £122 connection charge.

A new problem is that he couldn't tell me whether broadband would work there!! It's not that far from the exchange in a straight line but the telephone line goes round a very long way before getting to my new address. Off to the broadband board I go...

What has Business Call Sign got to do with anything? Not relevant here or to the OP as it was a residential line. And as for telling BT... if I had £1 for every error they made and reported to them, I would have retired to Florida. But even then, of course everything is subject 'to availability'. And should you already have the number to transfer, it would be available.

The Op clearly said their boyfriend had a business line, if they had took call sign on it instead of installing a new residential line it would have been Business Call Sign.

this all depends on what billing system your on with BT retail.
CSS customers can specify a call sign number.
Oneview customers can not due to the eoi agreement BT made with ofcom.
if your account number starts with GB you have no chance.
any other 2 letters lc / mr . lv etc you may be ok unless you have been migrated to new system.
