  • makes me glad that i left the nhs just before the agenda for change was brought in!!!! do you think this question would have arisen if there was no agenda for change and they just gave us the pay rise we were supposed to get?! how much money was invested to get rid of the grading system to then replace it with a numerical system??

Frankly I don't think a union person who is not in managements pockets exists. A union is probably as useful as a chocolate fire guard, it does seem that they will ignore some issues to get management support on others. Perhaps if unions revenues were more related to take home pay they might take more interest.

Trusts can offer or not offer overtime as they see fit, your only entitled to the 37.5 hour week. There is agreements on payment of overtime but I can't see anywhere in the AFC handbook that says your entitled to a certain amount of overtime. The trust can allocate that extra work to the bank. As for the working time directive, what I mean't was that overtime will probably depend more on if your trusts is currently in the red than being limited by the directive. For my sins I work in two trusts the one in the black does relent on overtime due to winter pressures the other one in the red doesn't and sometimes gives a bonus on bank.

Oh there are unionist not in managements pockets, not many but they are out there, they dont last long though as they get so much pressure from both management and more sadly their colleagues :-(

I didnt say though that anyone was entitled to any amount of overtime thats not what i said. I said that the cannot ban overtime, afc states that the default position when looking to fill a shift for example is to first offer your own staff overtime. after that they should offer either time in lieu or bank.

They can still cover shifts without resulting to overtime, some of the NA's at one of the trusts have been moaning because when there are staff shortages they have been moving people around and basically robbing Peter to pay Paul. The staff were putting in clinical incident forms for lack of staff until they were informed not to report via that route. Also I checked the email I received and it seems at the other trust some shifts can be covered by either overtime, bank or agency, looks like the trust was rather put out because no guesses what which the staff were choosing (even at their own trust!) and no guesses which one the trust wanted them to do.

my department would not function if the staff did not do overtime as we are a specialist area and no bank staff is trained to do our job. The trust as banned the use of agency staff.

I mean't via other approved official routes, if the OP is not permitted overtime just on financial reasons and this effects patient care the issue should be raised and hopefully it will be quickly corrected.
