the clicking is normal , leave it alone for a good few hours , its just draining it further trying it like that

the charging lights often still work from the car batterys power even if its unplugged ...mine does

What car is it? I could maybe give you some advice on what price a battery should be before you go to Halfrauds...? Definately sounds dead though, and dont try starting it with the charger still attached  jump start would be best and just leave it running for a few minutes.

Could also be fan belt slipping & not charging the battery? Has the engine been squeeling, especially when you rev, lately?

honda accord. 51 plate. halfords have me down for a HB053 at £71.99.

haven't noticed the fan belt recently. although looking at the battery, I've had it two years, and it didn't look new when I got it!

going for some jump leads when the wife gets home, so we'll see. might be worth changing the battery too.

The Jap batteries can be wierd with different sized terminals etc. The 053 is not a regular fitment so sounds a bit special, but a quick Google search shows them available for about £40.

Before Halfrauds phone som local car parts and accessories suppliers - yellow pages, get some quotes. Swap the battery over yourself.

For best/quickest charging, remove the battery from the car and charge it indoors, the warm house will help it. leave it on charge overnight, if you use the car everyday, you might not need a new battery.

Get yourself a set of jump leads just incase, keep them in the car.

Always best to shop around for things like this, prices can vary immensely, had same problem with my subaru, cheapest quote locally was £58 and most expensive was £85... Would have got it cheaper online but needed car urgently.

got the jump leads, started first time.

hopefully all should be well now, and I can shop for the battery rather than get it from halfords.

    cheers for all the responses.

is it definatly the battery at fault or has the alternator stopped charging it?
have the battery tested at a local motor factors before buying a new one.
