I finally found some spare change behind the sofa and decided to purchase a dvd writer.

I've come across one from SVP.co.uk for £36.44 (TOTAL inc Delivery)

I'm a bit worried about that they will sell it with no cables, installation screws and software.

I am just replacing my existing CD writer, will it fit in straight away or is there anything I need to know?

Its going into a DELL 2400 model.

It should pop straight in no problems as if yer gonna replace the Original drive
you will use all cables and screws from that.

It's £30 at Play.com (free P&P). Check in the Grab It Now... forum, there was a post about it.

I'd try and get the 110 (without the D at the end) as it'll support DVD-RAM too.

Alternatively, if you look somewhere like https://www.microdirect.co.uk, they have loads of other equivalents (LG, NEC, LiteOn, etc...).

LG drives are also good, and also write to DVD RAM. I have an earlier version of this one from Disk Depot who are doing a 50p postage weekend for next working day delivery (if you spend £30). They also stock the Pioneer drives if that suits you better.

Dont forget the NEC 4550 now also a dvd-ram writer, the Japanese love ram discs.

NEc 4550, Pioneer 110 and Lg 4165/7 all now around £30

I've got an LG GSA-4165B and I've just bought some Panasonic RAM discs to try out the RAM feature. As I understand it, RAM allows you to save directly to the disc by drag and drop but it won't work for me - I just get an error message saying "Windows does not support this CD-RW format".

It burns fine to DVD-RW and I used Nero tools to check compatibility and it recognises all the different disc formats (including RAM).

When I check the RAM disc properties it says "file system: UDF" - do I need to do something to format the disc before I can use it ?

Any help would be appreciated

(BTW, I'm using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and NTFS file system)
