Double glazing quote

I’ve got someone coming tomorrow to give me a quote for double glazing. I’ve just read a story on here about a D/G salesman staying FIVE hours! I’ve got such a small house that it should take him about a minute and a half to measure my windows!
It’s a local company that are coming, not one of the well-known ones. I thought in the current climate I’d prefer to give my trade to a little company who probably need it more than one who can afford to advertise on TV.
I've read in the other posts that D/G salesmen try tricks like offering a reduced price if they can display an advertising board outside, or ringing their boss. Any other tricks I should be wary of?
I’m determined I’m not going to sign anything tomorrow. I don’t think I have a cooling-off period as I asked them to call. If it gets to about an hour and the salesman is still here, how do I get him to go?
One last question – Having previously seen offers of “7 windows for £1999” and the like, which say that bay windows count as more than one window, I understand that bay windows cost more than “flat” windows. I have a 1980’s box bay window – I guess that will cost something like 3x normal window?

I don't think you need worry about a small local company doing that whole staying for hours and ringing the boss business. More than likely it will be the company owner who will come out. My boyfriend has his own small family run double glazing business and he said they should be there 1/2 hour max.0

Minnie was right, he only stayed an hour...and didn't ring his boss!
I've got 2 quotes:
1) to replace the sealed units, hinges ( which i asked for as they are very rusty, and this was highlighted by the survey when I bought the house ) and add trickle vents to the existing frame was £1596 ( plus VAT ) plus 2 days' labour £500 ( plus VAT ), so total would be £2410.40
2) replace everything is £2735 ( inc VAT ), but if I decide by Monday I can get them at the Xmas offer price
which is £2486 ( inc VAT )
So, if it comes to a choice between taking the Xmas offer price for total replacement vs just replacing the units and saving a whole £75, it's a fairly easy decision! My existing frames are pretty grotty, so if I just replaced the units, in a year or two I'd probably need to change the frames anyway.
I haven't yet had another quote. Trouble is, part of me wants to use this company as I used them for windows on my last house ( about 4/5 years ago ) and we were really pleased with the work. In fact, a year later we used them again to replace the back door. One of my neighbours has used them recently for a conservatory.
When I used the company for my old house, it was approx £1300, but that was for 4 windows and now I have 5 ( one of which is a box bay window )
Does £2486 sound reasonable?0 -
are these windows box sash windows at presentif you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction0

Hello a6windows,
none of the windows are sash windows. The ugly box bay window is non-opening on the 2 sides, and the front is one big ( half the size of the whole window ) window which opens, and the other half of the front is plain at the bottom and a little opening one at the top.
Talking of openers, there are 8 openers in all.0 -
i would say based on what you have said that the price even after xmas discount is still a little high based on manchester area dont know the prices for surreyif you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction0

My boyfriends business is midlands based and he says that is a fair price he said he would say about £250 each for the 4 windows and then £1200 for the bay so that £2200 all fitted. I think the further up north you go things are cheaper.0

Thanks Minnie ( and boyfriend! ). Unfortunately this part of Surrey is very expensive for everything. And before you ask, no, wages aren't the corresponding amount higher to make up for it! ( I'm paid minimum wage )0

Cocoloco,
I am north west/ Stoke area and that seems a touch expensive but not hideous alot depends on what profile they are using.
Getting them all replaced is the better choice.
Good luck0 -
I paid £1850 for 3 windows last year (the 3rd one being very small). I am in North London.0

If you have used them before and are happy with the service they provide then I would say it is worth paying the extra few hundred quid.0
