Quick question for board guides

My question is as a result of this post in the now closed thread:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=17201987&postcount=119
How does it work then? Can board guides only close threads in their own section? If that's the case what happens when they are offline?
I didn't report anything as the horse had long bolted but what should people do if they felt so inclined while a thread is in full degeneration?
I've only ever reported one post and that took 48 hours and two emails before the offending post disappeared.
Is there a swifter way?

You can send a PM to BGs at the same time as reporting to abuse: I don't know about others but I get an email which prompts me to look at MSE even if wasn't planning to do a long stint.
At holiday times it's perhaps inevitable that both the abuse team and BGs will be less available than we usually are. However the three-pronged approach should get the fastest possible response.
And now ...
MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the Site Feedback board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi
Board Guides can only carry out BG functions on the boards they are allocated to, this bit which is in all our signatures and detailed in the thread here implies (even though it doesn't specifically state it) that it is only on the boards listed in the signature of the guide that these things can be carried out on.
"Hi. Martin has asked me to tell you I'm the Board Guide on the X (and Y) board(s). I'm a volunteer to help the board(s) run smoothly, and I can move and merge posts there."
As it happens the availability of the BG is a moot point, all abusive threads should be reported to the abuse@moneysavingexpert.com e-mail address and not a BG. Having said this however, the addition of a PM to a BG if they are online may get a thread locked pending review or maybe even deleted faster. However it isn't part of the BG role to be actually responsible for dealing with abuse; thats the forum teams job and the way to get to them is via the e-mail address. This is also detailed in the rules here.

I was wondering about the role of BG's too. In the sigs it say that they don't deal with abuse, but it the job description (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1009414#post1009414), it talks about them being able to delete spam. Is "abuse" only things like people arguing, racist b.s., etc.?
There was a blast of spam this morning on the Discount Codes forum, and it seemed as though there was no one to stop it. It was too early for the hired team to be around, and the board guides for DC&V weren't on at the time either. My understanding is that BG's for other forums wouldn't be able to delete this stuff, yes? I think it all got reported between several members, but it would be nice to just be able to PM whichever BG was online and have them be able to zap it.Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0 -
we deal as soon as we can, I'm often able to look on there about 6 am , so the junk is gone early, before you lot wake up
in my case the early morning check is done via a mobile , making use of free wifi , and a glut of PM's about stuff that I would delete anyway would cause me problems as the phone does not like the javascript pop-up that tells me I have new messagesEx forum ambassador

FWIW, the above wasn't a criticism, I just wasn't sure what "abuse" meant. I would've thrown spammers and trolls in there too.
Also, I used this same board software as a moderator at another site, but we have it set up to work differently. Reported posts create a thread in a "moderator forum". Mods can individually choose whether or not to be notified by email of new threads posted there. Smooth as silkPick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0 -

If reported threads went into a single moderator forum then you run the risk of BG's seeing full abuse reports, which we aren't allowed (and have no wish) to see.
We delete obvious spam posts and try to curb the activities of trolls as much as possible, however the very nature of a troll generally means the more a BG comments the more they post. So I just report them to abuse and keep an eye on the threads pending their decision - thats what they get paid for0
