Natwest and Direct Debit payments?

Is there a way to check when direct debits are due to be taken from your account? Like if someone has only £22 remaining of an overdraft and is worried that two DD will get taken from this account before their due date and they get charged for going over their limit. The DD are due to be taken out on the 3rd and 4th but sometimes they get taken out earlier, what happens if they do?

    If you don't have the money and the bank reject the payment you will get charged... can you ensure there is money in the account before that?

    Direct Debits are requested by the recipient. The bank doesn't know what Direct Debits are due until they are requested to be paid, so it can't tell you.

    The 3rd and the 4th are weekends. This means that the money will actually leave on the 5th, but you should make sure that you have enough money to cover direct debits on by the end of the working day *before* the debits are taken. That would be today. Otherwise, NatWest might look at the account balance e.g. in the small hours of Monday morning, and they wouldn't necessarily have enough money to cover it.

    Under the Direct Debit guarantee, the only way that a d/d can be taken earlier than it's due is if you are notified in writing.

    If you know a d/d is going out and you haven't enough available funds, you can still get it paid and avoid unpaid item charges by going into your bank *before* cut off time (usually 3.30pm) and pay in enough cash.

    Be sure to ask the cashier to pay it for you as it often needs to be keyed through manually
  • As stated make sure there is enough money in. If DD's are set up before say wages and/or benefits are credited it may be worth changing the DD to after wages etc go in that way you know for sure there is enough money in so they get paid okay.

    Natwest sometimes earmark the funds earlier though, with a future transaction date - e.g. if the DD is due to be taken on Monday, it will show as a pending transaction from Saturday(ish). This can cause people to get uppity and start shouting that their DDs are going out early, because they were planning on paying in cash on the Monday or whatever to cover it...

    (Note, they also do this with BACS credits, so it goes both ways)

    I also have a question about Natwest and Direct Debits.

    I had three direct debits leave my account today - my rent, my tv licence and my phone bill. I was only aware of my rent and tv licence so only had the amount for these two bills credited to the account. As soon as I realised that the phone bill direct debit had been collected too I went straight to the bank and put the extra cash in the account. This was all by 4pm today, the same day these direct debits were collected. My main concern now is that these direct debits will come back unpaid? I really can't afford the charges.

    They possibly will, I amsure that any funds paid into NatWest after 3:30pm don't go in until the next working day, in which case you are too late. You should have asked the cashier when you paid it in.

    Correct, 3.30pm is the cut-off for same-day payments into accounts for NatWest. Later than that and it's classed as next working day.

    3.30pm is the cut off for payments into an account to guarantee to show as that day, however if you need a direct debit to be paid that day then the money must be in by 2.30pm and no later, this is when there is an automated 'sweep' of all accounts.
    When you get to the end of your tether, tie a knot and hang on.
