Car Insurance CLaim Help!

Any help greatly appreciated!
We have 2 cars, a new Mini that Hubby needs to use for work & gets a car allowance to pay for. The mini is mine but we didnt want 2 new cars so hubby is taking it on & I bought an old golf gti from ebay - all great.
1 week after byuing the golf, a taxi driver ran into the back of it as he didnt see a red light banghead.gif Hubby bought a new light cluster from the local breakers & so the golf has been drivable but is VERY dented. The other party have accepted full liability.

Swiftcover rang me on Tuesday to make me a total loss offer, completely what I was expecting - I said to the engineer "I DO NOT HAVE THE V5 DOC IN MY NAME YET AS I ONLY BOUGHT THE CAR 5 WEEKS AGO". No problem says he - you will get the payment in 5-7 working days. So I accepted their offer.

They now say the wont pay me until I get the V5 - so I ring DVLA - the V5 will take up to 6 weeks - Swiftcover say you will get the payment 5-7 days AFTER you get the V5, and by the way you cannot drive the golf as we have written it off.

So, I have to wait up to 7 weeks to get the money & we cannot drive the golf - we live in Gloucester, hubby needs to travel to Bristol, I need to travel to Swindon - we need 2 cars!

Swiftcover then put me on to their 'car hire people' who have said "Its not the other party's fault that you don't have the V5 - we can't help you" so I go back to Swiftcover who say "There is nothing we can do to help". banghead.gif

I have since written back to Swiftcover and said "I am now unable to accept your offer as I accepted it based on misleading information, and it will render me unable to work, which is unacceptable."

So basically Swiftcover have proper screwed me for 7 weeks - any of you guys have any ideas? I will be stuffed workwise for those 7 weeks and I dont think not going in will go down too well especially with the threat of redundancies looming!

Is there any other insurerer that would re-insure my golf so I could use that? It still has a valid MOT etc....

Help please! hail.gif

  • What you need to do is get the car re mot'd. It will have been "written off" as a Category "D" total loss, meaning that it's just not economical to repair. Send SwiftCover a copy of the MOT and ask them to continue to insure you "third party only" whilst you wait for the V5 - that way you are legal for driving the car.

Once you have settled the claim and SwiftCover have taken the car away, claim your excess and the cost of the MOT off the other side; they should be willing to pay.

The alternative is to phone the insurers of the other side and ask them to help.

Personal opinion: NEVER INSURE WITH SWIFT COVER AGAIN, AS THEY ARE USELESS!!!!!
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.
