Guilts And Bonds

Given the current climate I (as I am sure many here ;)) am looking at my savings and investments. Various sources recommend that you keep a percentage of your money in cash, guilts and bonds, and equities, the percentage depending on your age (years to retirement) My question is this: If you invest in Guilt and Bond Funds is this the same as investing in Guilts and Bonds directly? Which is better: Funds or direct?
Noobie (not so :D) trying to make loads a dosh - please bear with all my questions  Thanks :D

Actually that might be a good re-naming for Gilts.

The Government should feel guilty for squandering so much money, and having to borrow so much.

There's only one way to find out !!!!

In my opinion the answer would be via Direct holding.

The problem with this for most investors is that the amounts required for direct holding are larger than some people can manage, and even if they do have the amounts it can lead to a lack of diversification in their portfolio.
