shared house and insurance

hi,
Ages ago I moved into a rented shared house, somewhere in my contract it states that I am supposed to buy contents insurance. I never got round to it and he's never actually asked for any proof. There only seems to be Endsleigh which offers if for students shared houses; I will only be a student until May anyway and I will continue living in the same place once I graduate.
I am unsure of the risks, whats the cost likely to be etc.
Please can anyone advice.

It will depend how much cover you need. My daughter had £7500 cover with Endsleigh and paid about £100. There are a few other places do student type insurance, so shop around. You can still have it once you graduate if you are in the same house, but next year it could be cheaper once you stop being a student.
Have you googled "student insurance"? I got about 3 quotes for DD, HSBC I think, Karma maybe? There are others.
The LL insures his furniture etc, so it is just your own stuff you insure. In many cases, if your parents have a good insurance, it will cover your stuff "temporarily removed from the home". Have you checked that?0 -
Most offer a sharer's contents insurance, alot cheaper than endsleigh...but you have to phone to get quotes. You could always phone a broker and get them to do the work. Aplan aren't bad.0

Its not temp though ... I officially live here and will do so after I finish uni, I was hoping I could just get normal insurance as its not a student house ...

hi,
I've just had a look on Karma and in the exceptions it states in the laptop part that its only covered if less than two years old at the time of claiming! That excludes me.
I will pop over to HSBC and see what they can offer ......

You will find it very difficult to get "normal" insurance while you are still a student. Mention the word "student" and most companies refuse to quote.
It won't make any difference that it is not a student house. My daughter owns her own flat and is a post grad student living alone, and she still had difficulty getting quotes.
If you have completely left home then you cannot use your parents' insurance cover, so best to keep trying for quotes.
Endsleigh are often held up as being expensive, but they actually came up with the best quote for DD in the end.0 -

pretty weird contract clause, i don't really see why your landlord would care whether or not you purchased contents insurance to cover your own possessions. are you sure that's what the clause says? i could understand a clause that specified that your possessions are not covered by the landlord's contents insurance, but i can't understand why a clause would require you to get contents insurance - it would never benefit the landlord in any way because if any of the landlord's furniture or appliances were stolen, you wouldn't be able to claim for these items on any contents insurance in your name. you can only insure things that are yours.
i would only buy contents insurance if you actually have stuff that is worth insuring. if not then personally i would just ignore the contract clause.0 -
hi,
I have a laptop, printer, tv, dvd player etc - nothing hugely expensive but I couldnt really afford to rebuy all the stuff if I should lose it.
I would prefer to be covered by insurance, it makes sense to me!
