    Hi Vikki!

    We've all been there!

I'm useless at saving in bank accounts but very good at saving coins - I have tins for my £1 and £2 coins.
When you see something you want can you try giving it marks out of 10 and seeing if that works.

It's difficult at your age because you find yourself trying to keep up with mates in the car/clothes/going out stakes.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

What are savings actually for anyway? Incase you loose your job?

    1. To eventually own your own home.
    2. In case you lose your job....
    3. Holidays
    4. State Pension is next to nothing.....
    5. Retire earlier in life...

I can think of a hundred more reasons.... why don't you get a savings bond so you can't touch your savings for a couple of months or years?
Smile more often, it's FREE :hello: Live on £4000 for a year stalker! :p

Hi bank of slate, Thank you for your post. Yes I think I never used to 'keep up with the jones' but I think I do, do that now a bit, not even meaning to!

Thick question from me but those tins of coins, are they actually that? and where do you keep them? I kinda like that idea. I'd have to be careful in my house though no one else 'borrows it' lol Thats also a good idea about the marks out of ten. Thanks :)

I feel bad posting and going on about my situation when its very small compared to others, but I can sort of empathize with others, as I see my parents going through it all. I also not being nasty don't want to end up deep in debt, but I could easily go that way, the way I am!

hi vikki, just looking at your spends.
Your AA cover is a massive £140 this seems way over the top.
Suggest you cancel your AA breakdown cover, it might be a auto renew so
have a look at that so you have to physically cancel it.

You can have another look at their (AA) website and see if they do a cheaper deal
Also have a look at RAC and Green Flag.
Friend of mine got AA or RAC cover a couple of months back for
the basic for £38 and got a gift voucher for M & S for £25, how's that for a bargain
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Thanks for that list, very good ones there. I know they may seam obvious to most but as I am a 'live now, can't take it with you when you die kinda person' sometimes I wonder why? I am also better paying off something rather than saving for something :( I want to change that though.

Never heard of an savings bond, I'll have to look in to that, thanks:)

Just wanna say again, I really like this site. It's the best site I have found in ages. I am sure its going to be a real support for me, had a tough time with parents financial situation for awhile now. I am sure the way things are going i'm afraid to say it, it could get worse for them which effects me too.

firstly as a former mini owner... the TLC package - check it will still cover if you have modified the Mini heavily...

How much to save... well - why don't you look around and find out how much a flat rental would set you back in the area you are? with bills :) and then see if you can save that amount every month. That way when you move out not only will you have a nice deposit possibly to buy a flat, but you won't even miss the money you're paying out on "normal" bills :)

VERY VERY sensible advice...follow it, would be my pennyworth!

And if your parents are struggling why don't you suggest paying them more rent???? I'm sure that £150 no where near covers the cost of you living with them...

Yea luckily I haven't modified the engine so should be alright, i'll ask though before handing over the money.

Thats a very good idea too, I'll have to work it all out, god that would be scary though haha.

I think the only way I can save is when I can't get to it, premium bonds is good as its too much hassle trying to get the money out.
