Are those cars exclusively available to people who rip others off? Is that only way to get enough money to buy one of those babies? Do you measure how 'bent' someone is by the car they drive?

I have a bicycle that I spent over £3000 on. It's beautiful (To those that appreciate bicycles), but as I live close to where I work, we as a family only have one car (A mazda estate if that means anything in your eyes). Did I rip people off to get my bike?

How many practices do those dentists own? How many people do they employ? How many hours do they put in? How much money have they invested in their businesses?

Some of the top earning dentists in this country own large chains of NHS practices. If they want the stress and hassel of all the legislation that goes with that, the staff problems, equipment worries, uncertainty over the future funding of NHS dentistry then I reckon they deserve every penny.

They could well have been from a well off family in the first place. Whose to say? Maybe they have other business interests. I know some dentists with very diverse interests. The skill it takes to run a dental practice can translate into many arenas where money is easier to make.

Dentists are business owners. Some are damn good at it. The majority have smaller businesses and make a decent living in line with the study they have put in to get there, and the investments they have made.

Some are crap at running businesses and struggle.

Have a read of THIS post from one of the other fora yesterday. What do you think happened to the dentist mentioned? Flew off in his helicopter, or went bust?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Toothsmith, I raise my hat to you.
I would advise you to use your admirable scepticism and call up the figures etc for fluoridation. It is important that opposition to the addition of unecessary chemicals to the water supply should also come from within the dental profession itself.
    Salutations.

I wondered why Birmingham was so quiet - everybodys dead! :p

Not disputing that it was an NHS practice thetope, I am saying that it was not NHS treatment he was quoted for. Gold crowns arent 100% gold so a "gold crown" is available on the NHS for around about the £100 mark, not several hundreds

I don't know if it's different in NI Teerah, but gold crowns, or even porcelain bonded crowns have not been available for molar teeth on the NHS on the mainland since 1998. On molar teeth, Non-precious 'silver' coloured crowns have been all that is available since then.

I returned, 12 days ago, from Goa where I spent 5 weeks. Having had a nomadic work life for 12 years, I was unable to build up a relationship with a singular dentist & never felt at ease going to the dentist. During the 5 weeks, I had dental treatment consisting of 9 teeth out and 2 "Valplast" dentures made. So far, no trouble. I'm completely happy with the treatment I got. It certainly helps the recuperation on their marvellous beaches.
Total price for 4 visits for the extractions and 2 visits for the denture measurements/casting and fitting
    £228 plus £1.20p for the course of antibiotics & painkillers (which I didn't need/use).

  • Jusr remember everyone, come April, NOBODY will be registered with an NHS dentist. And in 3 years time when the money for Dentistry in the NHS will no longer be protected and can be spent on whatever the Primary Care Trust desires, there will be very few NHS practices left. The government have just killed NHS dentistry. Remember that the next time you see Rosie Winterton on the telly saying what a good thing this new contract is.

Hi toothsmith, we still have the gold ones here (nicer looking than the silver coloured ones) but not the bonded on the NHS. Didnt realise it was different over there

    Nicer looking and functionally better.

Not being allowed to do them on the NHS was the final straw for me that made me go private.

How do prices in France compare to thos in Poland, and the quality.

I'd rather go to France, as I expect the quality there is better. Can one get NHS cover there under EU regs?

    Thanks
