Desktop/laptop?
What screen size?
Do you need wireless networking kit? If so, do you have a cable or ADSL broadband connection at home?
What peripherals do you need (eg printer, scanner, speakers)?
What other extras? TV card? Card reader?
Do you need word processing software? Many machines come bundled with the very basic Microsoft Works but if you need Word, you're best paying for a legit copy with your computer. Buying it at a later date can cost a fair bit more.
How often will you use this computer and what for? Gaming/graphics work/video editing/word processing/just getting online once in a while?
I'm sure we'd all like to help you but these are all things we'd need to know to offer any useful advice.
There's no point spending money on things you won't use when you could put it towards better components you really do need.0 -
If your wanting an idea, have a look at https://www.dell .co.uk for a rough idea and then shop around, you should be able to beat them in a lot of cases.

Or, you could build your own ...I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Sorry i should have been more precise. The oc is actually for my cousin hers has just packed up. Im sure she would be happy with a 17-19" flat screen monitor. As for the wireless she is already connected to the net through aol so no need for any connection equipment. She would need a dvd writer ect and she wants one that runs fast lol.(Her words not mine). I would be able to build but she cannot and we are in diff parts of the country. It is a desktop she is after.0

I mostly agree with Jon_C - decide what you want first, then shop. I would build my own (have done for years) as it means you get the specs you want. Whilst not rocket science, it's not eveyone's cup of tea.
I would avoid the 'usual suspects' - Currys, Dixons, Comet etc. as you almost certainly buy a better spec and quality online or elsewhere. Not always the case, but you'll need to look hard to find a real bargain.
Dell are well-made in the main - but probably pricier than some others, and ebuyer.co.uk often have some real beauties and are good for buying bits if you want to build one for yourself. There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences. - P.J. O'Rourke0 -

I've been using https://www.pcpro.co.uk for lots of free advice. I agree that you should steer clear of the high street and look at more specialised retailers.
The fact you not interested in games should help your PC budget.0 -
With point five of what you need, don't use Dell. They will use their own shape components so you can't upgrade it yourself. I think that if you build it yourself, it would cost around £5000
