dont know if this has already been posted, but now symantec have taken over sygate they have discontinued the free sygate firewall. I know a lot of us use sygate, but should we now start to use one of the alternatives as sygate will not be updated. I suppose they think everyone will rush out to buy norton!

I am currently using the Sygate product, and it has served me very well. I don't intend to stop using it all the time it's still doing its job. There will come a time when it stops being useful as 'net-based attacks become more sophisticated, I suspect.
If you want to change, there is a reasonable list of free, shareware and paid-for firewalls here.
The one that interests me is the new one from Lavasoft - makers of Ad-Aware. The full product is going for 29.95 US dollars and it's from a company you can trust. I think I'll wait until it has been in the field for about six months before deciding, as I never go for a product until other people have tested it!There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences. - P.J. O'Rourke0 -
It generally shouldn't need to be updated much more. It'd just be bloat or features that'd get added.
For general inbound traffic, if you already have a hardware firewall sygate will be fine. I still use the older Kerio v2.1.5. It's usually on leak tests that (outbound traffic) updates may be needed as (mentioned above) attacks become more sophisticated."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
