you may have a couple of case fans in there, easiest way to diagnose is to open the case and stop the fan with a finger very briefly, if the noise stops...it's that fan!
I replaced my case fans a couple of days ago (same noise) for some xilence redwings, my cpu fan at nearly £50 for the cooler, should last a lifetime!
thats something I'm sure I could manage to replace, I appear to have 2 fans one attahed to the psu and another one, which one do I try stopping or is it ok to stop both, on seperate start ups of course.0 -
my son has just said it sounds more like like a cow mooooing through a megaphone when its starts up!
Aha, yes... Sounds like a fan catching or sticking as my second PC does it for about a minute until I hit the case and it stops! I know, I know...
I agree with Data, open your case, start the PC up with the side of your pC case open and have a good look... Get a torch too on the insides so you can see if bad light....
Do what Data has said, your fingers will be "ok" as long as you do not stick em in fully when it's spinning... Sounds like a case fan to me and that would also account for the heat build-up inside too and perhaps other components hotting up...0 -

Just do the case one, NOT the PSU one.. That will have a proper gaurd on and will take your fingers off! Never open or mess around with a PSU... Just replace em... HIGH voltage...0 -

if it's the case fan, then measure it (80mm 92mm 120mm) and buy accordingly, I bought the redwings from ebuyer. 3 and 4 pin connectors, so it'll plug in almost anywhere.
edit. I would link...but apparently discontinued at ebuyer?!
regardless, the fans have good reviews, and my experience so far (a few days) is positiveUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

also if it is the fan in the PSU, getting a new PSU would be the safest option
If you NEED to open up a PSU, then leave it unplugged for a week and it'll discharge itself.
Anyway, back on topic. It soudns like a case fan you're takign about. So this will either be a 80mm or 120 mm. (just measure it with a ruler).
It reall doesn't matter what fan you get, they are all standard fittings. I would suggest getitng a good named brand one though, which will last longer and be more effective at pushing air through. I'd swear by any Akasa fan as being reliable and great performance(been using hte same Akasa 120mm fan for 8months with 0 problems).
The only other thing to note is whether it is 3-pin, or 4-pin. The 3-pin plugs into the motherboard (and allows the PC to control it's speed), while the 4-pin plugs into a spare PSU molex connection. You should have both avaible, so it doesn't reall matter.
80mm for £2.30 : http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3GHN&CategorySelectedId=11258&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11258,4294956809 3-pin (plugs into motherboard)
120mm for £6 : http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=5CND&CategorySelectedId=11258&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11258,4294956809
Those are the cheapest on dabs.co.uk, and they are a well trrusted site. You might be able to get cheaper ones on eBay, but it'll be pennies in it.0 -
have looked and measured and its a 3 pin type (thanks for the explanation as to different types)
is it really just that little bit of plastic fan that needs replacing? do I need anything else to go with it?0 -
just wanted to say a big thank you
fan now fitted and no more mooing cow noises!
you have saved me a fortune and a lot of wasted time too.
