just had my friend's car mot'd. a new style certificate was issued. it has a bar code and is now on the database. what the tester told me had confirmed my feelings towards the government. We have been told if we don't get the car mot'd before or at the expiry date next year, in another words forgot to mot it after a year, the owner will automatically be issued with a £80 fine. Isnt our government wonderful - not.

make a note in your diaries/pda etc to retest your car a month before the expiry date. You can have your car mot'd a month before it expires. The new certificate will start from the expiry date on the certificate
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

  • i'm doing mine every 6 months instead. I'd rather pay £40 every 6 months for the fun of it than the £300+ it's just cost me and the chance of a fine

side lights wrong colour - blue not clear
    near side light loose
near side light too high (cos it was loose)
fog light not steady red (European Lexus lights with no fog light, so reverse light painted red and re-wired)
tyre showing cords ... tracking must be gone cos the outside was ok (£65 for a tyre)
    wiper needed replacing
Handbrake went 2 days before MOT.

Repairs, MOT and retest was over £300

Who cares if it's money saving. If i get it done 6 monthly it might not kick the shiney crap out of my pocket every 12 months now THAT's moneysaving

erm just thinking that if you regulary check the car, say once a week, you will be aware of the problems you listed and would have repaired it at your own pace. I always check the lights/tyres once a week. Only takes 10 mins max.

  • if you knew me you'd know that'd never happen. i'm such a lazy arsed bollock it's untrue. I never had this many problems with the Celica so i don't expect it with the Golf.

saying that though the money was on the caliper and the tyre, the tyre was replaced the same time as the other rear tyre and both looked fine ( i don't do very many miles) at a glance with plenty or tread. The handbrake went 2 days before the MOT.

I have not heard about an automatic fine for a late MOT. There is a fine for a late VED of 80 quid, though you still can do it within the first month and you won't be fined.

Unless someone can quote chapter and verse, I think someone has their wires crossed.

The best thing to do is make sure your MOT is not at the same or similar time as your VED.
