It's a type of video format. It means if you download divx videos from the internet and burn them to a disk, it can read them.

If you don't know what it is, I wouldn't worry about it.

I recommend the Philips 5990 or 5980 at Amazon

DIVX is a way of compressing video/sound You require on a pc to play back these files a video player like the on supplied with XP and the codec which its free

XviD is one of the most common formats much like DivX
  • So four or five 700mb movies put on a 4Gb dvd and put in a Divx dvd player will play through a tv?
  • So if im just gonna be watching normal dvds I don't need it???

    You can get 6 x 700MB on a 4.3 GB DVDR

The better rips are much higher file sizes. I do my own for my own use because

    1. need to space so I store originals away
    2. Keep more films together
    3. Have a backup just in case

I do not share them though

You don't for normal DVDs, but we've had DivX DVD players for several years and wouldn't be without them, but then I like downloading AVIs from the net and watching them. Would never think of buying a DVD player that couldn't play DivX/MPEG4/xViD.

Though I do now have a PC connected to the main TV and play them direct that way, for the other TVs that have DivX DVD players, we still watch that way.

Yeah, that's what DivX DVD players are for, been out for many years.

Though note as AVI is simply a container file, the AVI might not always be a MPEG4/DivX/xVid file or the audio might not be, MP2, MP3 or AC3 so might not be playable on a standalone player, without being reencoded.

Some players might not like packed bitstream, so use a program called MPEG4Modifier to removed the packed bitstream.
