External Hard Drive Installation

Hi Guys, I am having a problem installing an external hard drive to my desktop PC. I am succesfully installing the hard drive and its related software, but when it comes to switching on the computer whilst the ext hard drive is still connected it fails to boot and freezes on one of the initial boot up screens. This problem disappears if i disconnect the ext hard drive before switching on the desktop PC. I have spoken to tech support at Buffalo and it could be one of two things, broken ext hard drive ( not this as works perfectly on daughters laptop) or a setting in the BIOS needs changing.
Can anyone offer assistance?
PC is a MESH AMD Athalon 64 3500+, 1024MB RAM, 300GB HD running Windows XP

It\'s the BIOS that needs changing. When you first turn on your computer, you\'ll be given a message to press a certain key to enter the BIOS or Setup - usually delete or one of the function keys. Once in there, navigate to the Boot Menu and set the hard drive as the first boot device and remove USB from the list altogether. HTH.0

Is your computer trying to boot from the USB drive? Can you disable this option in the BIOS?0

F2 to enter the Bios, disable any external usb boot up device & only have the internal hard drive to boot.
Does the external hard drive have any operating systems on?You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.0 -
No the ext hard drive has nothing on it apart from a backup program and some other software which has to be selected for installation.
Gonna try an get into the BIOS to see if there are any USB options on there.
Thanks for your help so far.0
