I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Nowt wrong with HP, also used Compaq ( they are HP now), Sony make nice laptops dunno about theirTowers.
I'd avoid getting one of Dixon Curry's PC world own brands, or come to that shopping with them at all.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Scroll down and upgrade memory to "2048MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024] [add £20.00 " (the second option)

Includes 18.5in monitor, and mouse and keyboard. For £350, not bad for a Dell.

    Incase you didn't see it.

Now, can we have a link to the new Dells which come with photography software like iPhoto?

Also, the OP wanted something for web-browsing; what is it about the Windows web browsing experience that you recommend to others? The viruses? Keyloggers? Trojans? Spyware? Malware?

    Do tell. ;)
And Marty, be you quiet :rotfl:
What is so amazing about iPhoto? I can view my photo's with any simple picture viewer (windows picture viewer), I don't want apple to organise my photo's for me, I can keep my photo's organised myself with little to no effort (just a few clicks :p) and i can share my photo's manually. None of my friends or family (to who i woudl want to see my pictures) use Flickr or MobileMe and i rarely upload to facebook. For editing, i would GIMP as a powerful free photo editing tool. It's an alternative for software which would be used rarely, and isn't needed by me because i can spare 2/3 extra clicks to open another program.
And iLife is hardly free, when you spend allot more on the slower hardware Mac, compared to a PC alternative.

Oh, and if you can't operate a PC online without getting viruses, keyloggers, trojans etc then you don't belong near a computer.

Quick update: I'm still struggling to locate a suitable desktop. I've phoned a local firm who build computers and gave them the specs suggested by Jaydee but he thought he'd be £100 dearer than PC World? (Quoting approx. £435) not sure which PC World computer to look at though?

I've tried looking at the dmxdimensions through one or two links on here but end up drowning in all the info. Can anyone PLEASE suggest which ones I should be looking at.

Please bear with my slow replies, using local library. Thank you to everyone so far.
  • Hello Techies! (bows to superior knowledge!)

I too am looking for a new desktop pc at about this price range. It will be mainly used for day to day browsing, the odd letter and playing mindlesss games! I love games like The Sims (the only family I have any power over!) and my son likes to play Flight Simuators and Madden games.

I have read this post and like the look of the 2 Dell packages suggested by A.1 and penrhyn, do you think they would be suitable for me?

I will also at some stage need to get a router? (I think) as my daughter is at Uni and comes home and needs to use her laptop. Our TV/Broadband is with VirginMedia XL package, can I get something from them to let Hannah go wireless or do I need to buy something?

Sorry to be so un-technical! I'm probably someone who shouldn't really have a computer!
    Any advise gratefully recieved! Thanx!

Now why didn't I take any notice of the
    second part of that quote!!???

Thanks again for all the input. A few people suggest building one myself (not a hope in hell). Can anyone recommend someone in Doncaster, S.Yorks?

Building a pc is very easy :) It's like building a jigsaw!! The parts only go into one place! Just research is needed for compatable parts... easy to buy decent bundles (include: motherboard, ram, processor) Only need to buy a gfx card / hard drive / cd drives! EASY! :)

Also, - you thought about "reconditioned pcs?"

Don't fret at the term "reconditioned".... basically - discounted items conditioned to new.. with the full warrenties..... comet recently selling a laptop: blue ray / 4 gb ram / dual core processor 2.5ghz / 320gb HD / nivida gfx card 512mb hdmi out...... all for £449!

Pc's are "cheaper" then laptops.... so may be worth a peek!
