unknown numbers

been getting phone calls from a couple of 0800 and 0870 numbers - can't find any details on the internet and never get left messages. Any ideas who they are from?

For weeks I have been called up to several times a day by a similar number 08000 191 773. No reply when phone picked up. It has been a real nuisance for a long time.

If you ring that number a recording states it is Exel(Excel?) Marketing and they are calling you on behalf of a client and there is nobody to talk to. It states if you do not want to receive any calls ring 01294 225321 – that number is always engaged until late at night and then no reply.

I have contacted BT and made a formal complaint to TPS – I am registered with TPS not to receive cold calls.

Anyway today a result – there was someone on the line from the same number and he asked for me by name! It was MBNA for Alliance and Leicester Credit cards.

Now I have an A & L card, which I hardly ever use, which is why they were calling – to give me some irresistible offer no doubt. I went into ballistic mode and I am assured that my number has been removed.

    I have also now complained to A & L

Further to my last post pricefighter gave me the website for Excell

I have just got hold of the duty manager at Excell.

He checked and confirmed that they had indeed called me 5 times yesterday and on previous occasions. He also confirmed that your 0800 number was one of theirs.

However their computer 'detected' that an answerphone had answered and therefore hung up. I have perfectly standard BT phones with no answerphone(I use 1571).

Obviously their computer is wrongly set up, but it seems that they are not going to do anything about it. They have removed my telephone number but of course it will not stop other people receiving these calls.
  • I kept getting missed calls from 08700500524 also. I kept ignoring them as I thought they'd probably only be junk.

Eventually they turned into 08007311731 - after a few missed calls of this I answered it the next time they phoned. It was a courier service - I'd ordered a parcel from amazon.co.uk and they couldn't find the address so wanted directions!

I gave them the directions, the parcel came the next day, the calls have stopped.

    Best wishes

If the number is 0800 then they will have to pay to receive calls. If they were annoying me I would just sit down with my phone (landline - 0800 costs from mobiles) and keep calling it all night.

Would run them up a nice little bill... :D

That's what I did with the people who were trying to get me to sign up to Sky, when at the time I was paying Sky for a subscription.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • Keep getting calls from 08700500524 they said they were Scottish Power and wanted to do a "price comparison".
They hung up after I said "yes" in a confused manner.:money:

Iv just had two calls from this number in the last half an hour, but to my mobile, has anyone else had this happen? They didnt leave a voice mail, and as I didnt know who it was, I didnt answer, lol, now I am tempted to and put my mobile on charge with the mute on and leave it for abit! ;)

They havent tried my landline, but I am with TPS for that, even though the odd call does get through.

Does anyone know if there is a call barring like TPS but for your mobile?

    Cheers,

    SJ

Do you know you can register mobile telephone numbers?

The Telephone Preference Service can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of live marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. This is because under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2004 it is unlawful to send an unsolicited sales and marketing text message. Telemarketing companies who send SMS messages need your prior permission. There is no obligation therefore for companies sending SMS messages to people who have agreed to receive them, to screen against the TPS file. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved. The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) is responsible for the enforcement of these regulations. Please click on the useful links page for their details.
    .........................
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
