Royal Mail not refunding!

Can anyone advise me on this please?
I won an item on ebay a while back (october) and it never arrived. I had paid via cheque.
I contacted the buyer who said she did 100% send it, and said if I wanted to claim she would send me the postage slip. I accepted this way around as I was stupid and didnt know better (I now know it should have been she who claimed not me).
Today I get back a letter from Royal Mail, and insted of a cheque or postal order to cover the cost of the item, I recieve 6 first class stamps and an apology!
I have emailed RM as according to the letter but not sure what to do: I cannot send proof of the items purchase as it was back in October and ebay will not let me bring back up the picture of the item nor the winning cost.
Anyone have any ideas on a way around this?

What should have happened is the seller refunded you and claimed of Royal Mail themselves. Ask the seller if they have a copy of the picture and maybe they might keep a record of what they have sold, ask them if they have the details. No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!
Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T0 -
What date in October is it from? I can still see items from November 1st? Try searching for your items bid on via www.goofbay.com for the last 120 days - may be better than eBays facility. If no joy, email the seller [have you already left FB?] and explain the situation, maybe they can help?
Did RM state why they haven't refunded? Because you cant prove the item value?Baby Boy arrived March 25th 2010 - 17 days late & 8lb 10oz :j0 -
As you paid by cheque there is nothing you can do via ebay or paypal. The seller should have refunded you in full and reclaimed the loss herself, but with a cheque you have very little leeway here to persuade the seller to do anything.
On other threads we do have some users who say a cheque is safer than paypal, so maybe wait for one of them to come online and assist you. Meanwhile, if you still have the sellers details why not give them another try?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. It's always sender's responsibility to claim for missing items afaik. My best advice would be to contact the sender directly. BTW which way was this item sent, just normal post I'm guessing? Or do u have a tracking number?4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

contact the seller and ask for their help, if they wont help then
If you can find the item number go to the resolution centre on ebay and enter the item number and describe the problem, you can still raise a item not received dispute even though you paid by cheque.
The onus is then on the seller to prove you received it.
Oh and 6 first class stamps is the minimum royal mail will pay in compensation for any complaint. i once received 6 stamps after a complaint about the postie breaking my letter box!!!0 -

!
This will not however get any money back for the buyer and I assumed that is the outcome that is needed here. There is nothing to stop the OP making a complaint against the seller, but there is actually very little point. A complaint via ebay can be done for up to 60 days from auction end.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Contact your seller and explain that you're not happy with the situation.
As luck would have it you paid by cheque so thus have your sellers address, so if need be, and the amount warrents it, you can always get your money back via the small claims court."Love you Dave Brooker! x"
