Seeking a second opinion

I've recently moved into a flat with my family. To my horror I discovered that this flat has a prepayment metre for electric after I moved in. I know I should have checked it when viewing but I didn't.

I know that a former tenant of the property ran up a load of debts because I have recieved angry letters from bailiffs. So it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why I have a prepayment metre.

Heres my question. Is it possible to get this metre removed? I know that if i wanted to I could pay my energy provider to remove it. They've told me they will only remove it for a fee. I tried to explain that the metre was fitted by a different energy company for an old tenant and that it wasn't fair that I'm being punished for her mistakes.

No dice!

I guess I'm just after a second opinion. Are they bluffing? Or are they under no obligation to help me.

They are under no obligation and they may or may not be bluffing. But why do you think it should it be changed for free or with no deposit? If you feel you are being punished for her mistake why should other customers be punished for your mistake?

There are other suppliers who will change the meter without charging. Ask around. (They may require a deposit but they will not bill you for the cost of changing the meter.)

That's fair enough. I just wanted the view of someone who wasn't me or the electric company.

In reply to your question, I guess i should have been clear. I have a spotless credit record. I don't owe money to anyone and never have. I guess I thought this counted for something. It appears it doesn't.

thanks for the reply though. I just needed that third party view on it.

Just change supplier, there is a couple of supplier that will change it free of charge when it comes on supply no requirement for deposit or requirement to pay by Direct Debit, only thing they will want is a credit check done, and again at no cost to you.
