Replacing a sky digibox question

Our 8 yr+ Grundig Skydigibox is wearing out and I would like to replace it. I contacted sky and they want £140 ish for a new one as I don't want to update to HD.

Please can anyone tell me the best place to go to get a reasonably priced new replacement? I know this following bit is going to sound daft but do I just swap the boxes over or will it involve tuning etc??:o

Thanks.

  • you could pick up a 2nd hand box from ebay. All you need to do is connect new box up and put card in, i think you may need to ring sky up with new box serial to pair your card up. no tuning needed

Very simple to change a standard box, just swap them over.

However, its an excellent time to change over to Sky HD+ for £99 or just Sky+ for about £49, and you'll get a new box for free, and Sky+ will change your life.

Otherwise, a secondhand replacement box should cost about £20 - I'd stop and ask an engineer for one if you see one - their vans are everywhere - I've done this before.
  • You can get a fairly new sky+box off the bay for £60...

    Or

Cancel your subscription, and then order in your OH's name a new one through quidco(measly £10 atm), along with the £15 online credit. You also have a new free box, with a £30 installation charge, with whatever contract you decide...

That and sky currently do the HD box for 99 online, but there is rumours out that its to be dropped to £49 new/old customers, and that the £10 sub will be scrapped in the first quarter 09!

Anyhow dont take my word on this, sure others can fill in the details...

    .

" wearing out " ??? There are no moving parts, it surely either works or it doesn't.

Plenty for sale on eBay or at car boot sales.

Just ask Sky to replace it free of charge. They'll probably refuse, so then you cancel your subscription. There's a possibility they'll agree to replace it at that point, but if not, go ahead and cancel anyway. You need to give a month's notice.

Sky are currently pretty desperate to keep all customers. During the notice period, they will contact you, and will offer to replace your Digibox, probably with one that's refurbished.

If for any reason they do not contact you with this offer, the day before the cancellation is processed, ring up and say you've changed your mind, and they will undo the cancellation with NO fuss.

Honestly, it's a no-brainer, there's no risk, so what have you got to lose??? Just do it.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

That's exactly what I was thinking.

We did this when our Sky+ box started deleting all the recordings every few days. It was out of warranty, so Sky wanted money to replace it. We told them in that case we'd just like to cancel our subscription; they asked if we'd wait while they "spoke to their supervisor", then they offered to replace it for free.

Try your local freecycle group - there's always loads being given away on there as people upgrade.

yep! one of my boxes started blowing the internal fuse.. within 2 minutes of putting a request on Freecycle i'd been offered one, within half an hour i'd been offered 3. Within an hour it was replaced with a working one.
