How much for professional Hair and Makeup

Hi there,

I live in North London and am getting married in June 2009. Am wondering how much I should expect to pay for a good bridal hair and makeup artist (without being ripped off of course). Also, do they come to your house/venue?

Thanks!

PS...if any of you have specific recommendations for North London that would be great!
  • I paid £80 for a hair and make up trial. The price on the day was supposed to be £150 but I was so disappointed and got so fed up of all the extortionate prices, I bought myself some nice new make up and brushes and did it myself. My normal hairdresser did my hair. The trial and day cost £36 respectively.

I'd say stick with what you know. At least I looked and felt like me (although a bit more glamorous than normal!).

Thanks, I've been quoted anything from £100 to £600 for just my hair and makeup. I can't believe how extortionate it can be!!!!

It's tough when you know you want a particular look but are just not willing to pay for all the extras like (multiple) trials.

I had a trial and agree with speckled hen as i hated it and went out and bought new make up and did it myself.
My hair was done by a local hair dresser and it cost about £50 for the trial and the day, she came to my hotel.

Stick with what you like and don't be afraid to say no to things:)

most people use their usual hairdresser. if you want them to come to you, expect to pay alot more, as you have to allow for the fact they are losing a days pay. go to the salon, and it should be cheaper, but then you have to get home without messing up your hair, and also be prepared to be out in public with really dressy hair, and casual clothes!

As for make-up, ive yet to meet a makeup artist who does anything like what the client wants. we all have visions of being a natural looking beauty, but the amount of slap they layer on, can be really offputting. but you really do need heavy makeup if you want it to last the day, and look good in the photos. Personally, most people can achieve the look they want themselves at home, without paying for a professional to do it

I would expect to pay £100 for hair in an up-do (this would include the cost of trial run), and about £80 if just wanting some boofh, and sparklies added

    £600!!

Blimey, have you tried to book Kate Moss' make up artist?:rotfl:

I'm in Scotland, and it's costing me £60 for hair and make up. Mind you, I would ecpect down south to be more expensive anyway.

I'm not having anything too 'done' so am hoping a local hairdresser can do it. I don't have a usual one I go to as I tend to just go for a trim at a few cheap in and out places. I'm therefore going to start going to one I took my daughter to a few weeks ago, so I can build up a relationship with them before the big day. I don't mind going to the salon as its really close to home and can just put a pashmina over my head or something to protect it!

I intend to invest in some new makeup and will go to one of those counters for a makeup demo. I don't usually wear much makeup and so need some expert tips!!

Hopefully won't cost more than £60 in total.

£600!!!  i know you'll paying london prices.... but £600!!

im going to have a makeup trial on my hen night at a local day spa, which will cost £45 i think, and then if i like it i'll have it for the wedding. i was going to do my own makeup as i dont wear a lot of makeup and i feel like when i go to makeup counters in boots, debenhams etc i end up looking like a clown  , but im hoping that the day spa will do a better job as they arent trying to sell me makeup and therefore dont have to insist that every one of the ten million products they slap on my face is essential, and i also want seperate false eyelashes put on and i know if i tried that at home they would probably end up in my eyebrows!!

i'll get my hair dyed as normal with my usual hairdresser probably a week or so before the wedding, but im going to go to a hairdresser near the day spa to have it styled (again a trial for the hen do and again for the wedding) and i would expect this to cost about £20 each time - any more than that and i'll be going elsewhere!!

so overall about £130 for the trial and wedding day..... hmmm, that seems rather expensive now ive added it all up!! *wanders off to google other beauty places near home*........... :D

Tell me about it! The lady before even said she was referring me to a cheaper professional so when she said £600 I almost fell off my chair and really felt like saying something a bit impolite. How do they think they can get away with it, and what types of people, wealthy or not, think that kind of price is worth it?!

Just so you can see this absurdity for yourself (local London salon) here's the website! http://murrayandmace.co.uk/prices.html

ok well, £600 for bride and one other, but STILL!

I agree the makeup thing is a tough one especially if you want to look different but still 'natural'. I'll try to haggle for a decent trial and be really insistent on the look I want. Pictures should help too, I hope!
