Thorntons online delivery

I am so
Recently I placed an on-line order for chocolates to give to family as gifts tonight and paid extra for "gold" delivery on 30 December as I knew I would be in. I bought them in the sale so I got some really nice gift sets at a good price.
However, the courier company tried to deliever them a day early when I was at work. It then claimed to have made a second attempt at delievery on the correct date but I know it didn't because I was at home all day and no-one called. When I raised this with Thorntons the courier company changed its story and said that it hadn't made a redelivery attempt - it just said this on its system automatically
Apparently the reason they hadn't attempted to redeliver was because they were waiting to hear from me! This infuriates me as on 29 December both my OH and I attempted to call the number on the card left by the courier company and on each occasion we got a recorded message. I tried again a couple of times yesterday with the same result. The recorded message states that they will make a second attempt at re-delivery the next working day so I relied on this.
Now it transpires that my parcel is at the depot which is a 60+ mile round trip and I can either collect it or wait until 5 January for redelivery (which will be no good anyway as I will be back at work all day). As I bought the chocolates as gifts for tonight the only option is for me to collect them or try and cancel the order and find an alternative present at the last minute... of course I could go to my local Thorntons but I'm told they don't have the gift sets I ordered online nor do they have anything like the same discounts.
I could cope with all of the above if I hadn't paid extra to make sure that delivery was made on 30 December - what was the point if no-one takes any notice of the delivery date?!
Clearly a bargain is not worth having if it causes so much inconvenience and extra cost!
Thanks for listening - I feel much better now;)

I would try and get a refund, it all sounds a lot of hassle to me.
I personally would not buy chocolates from Thorntons, online or at the shop. It tastes like cack.:(Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670
