I was at the park for an hour the other day, and I took almost 200 photos

I suspect taking one picture every 18 seconds for an hour is not all that typical though!

Maybe not, but three photos a minute isn't really an awful lot, especially if you have a faster camera that can fire off several shots a second.

I can fill 3 x 2Gb cards from my camera very easily in a day, that comes to around 3k pics at high quality or several times more at lower quality!

It's very easy to generate 10's of Gb of images in a year or 2

But what on earth do you do with so many images? With 3000 photos, just viewing each one for 5 seconds would take over 4 hours!

One of the ways of doing this is to simply get an external harddrive and move your pictures/photos/videos and leave the harddrive with OS installed in place.
However, for new harddisk installations you will need to have an OS(windows - i gather from the posts) installed again and an authorisation code from microsoft.
This code can be generated online if connected to the internet or just use phone number that is generated (normally 08000 188 354) and you will be given an activation code.
    hope that helps

and he mentioned the other day he has 140gb of images/video of his 8month old son.
That was the good thing about the old cine cameras - you only got about 4 mins per film - made you think very carefully about editing in camera

So by the time his son will be 16 that'll be about 3 or 4 terrabytes - just as well cost of storage is falling - but the value of your time isn't - you could spend a good % of your life watching that lot.

Also no one (directly) mentioned 'BACKUP'
In then past we generally all had a old shoebox of old family images to fall back on - but now every one has them on hdd, these archives are going to be lost as HDDs fail, get corrupted, accidentally formatted etc

Get 'em backed up to multiple medias now

Just in case anyone is still interested. The problem with the full disc was due to some huge amount of backing up on to it. No idea what caused it as my son treats me as if I am senile as far as the computer is concerned. Won't take the time to explain anything. Anyway, he got rid of it all and now the problem has gone away for a while at least. Funny thing though, when he wants some help with DIY, my senility seems to vanish.

Perhaps this quotation is somewhat relevant.
When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

He was 40 last year. Once a son always a son, I suppose. We get on all right really.
