HELP! - TV / Home Theatre / PS3 set up

Right I wonder whether anyone can help.

I have just purchased a Sony Bravia KDL40V400 40" LCD t.v and a Sony DAV-DZ260 Home Theatre System.

I have managed to link up everything OK - (TV linked up via HDMI cable, the home theatre system (which also has an intergrated DVD player) linked up via HDMI cable and SCART lead, SKY linked up via standard SCART & Aerial).

However I can't seem to link the Playstation 3 up correctly - I currently have tried using HDMI lead and can just get picture but the sound will only go through TV!! Which is highly annoying!!

Do I need to buy an optical cable ?? if I do will this then allow me to have the full srround sound when using the PS3????

Many thanks!

  • An optical lead may help - link directly from the ps3 to the home cinema system - you'll need to select the optical input on the home cinema system to get the sound (consult the instruction book!)

    leave the hdmi from the ps3 to the tv where it is...

    ps3->hdmi lead->telly
    ps3->optical output->Hometheatre system

    select optical input for audio on the home cinema sys and you should be up and running.

    Alternative way :-

    tv->2 phono to 2 phono lead-> home cinema sys

    won't get dolby digital this way though, just pro-logic surround

    above assumes home cinema system has optical input?

    Has the tv got an optical input? and an output?
  • Home cinema has Optical Input, T.V only has optical output --- according to the manuals!! :confused:

    Thanks!

    That's cool - you may want another optical lead if the dav-whatever has more than one optical input - that way you'll get dolby digital from the telly whenever our lords and masters decide to broadcast in a format that supports it! (i.e probaly never :-( )

    Still a chore for me to set these up - and I've been in the electrical retail trade for 15+ years...just set my Mums new 32" Toshiba up tonight with Sony HDD/DVD recorder (I'm deliberately crap at remembering model numbers now - bad for the image dontchaknow) - took me about an hour - plus the time explaining how to use it!

    Go the 1st route then - hope it works ok! re post if not - I'm sure someone'll help if I've gone to bed!
  • Thanks!

    I know - they are a pain in the butt!

    Thanks again for your help!

    Ideally, the home cinema system needs 2 optical inputs. One for the PS3 and one for the Sky
    If not then youll need some sort of 'optical splitter' (Though I dont know of ANYONE thats used one so unsure how well they work)

    I don't think the standard sky box has an optical connection ??

    Likewise, would be interested as just connected my Virgin+ to my older Phillips surround sound system via this way (optical) after buying the cable from Maplins, but saw you could get a splitter and as such could connect my blu ray player also this way...

    Anyone have any comments about splitting optical audio and how well it works? ;)

    Oh, standard Sky box does not have optical, nor does the standard Virgin box too. :rolleyes: ;)

    ahhhh
    You have the original sky box?
    Have to be phono leads then. When anyone mentions sky, I always assume they have sky + with the recording hard drive in (Which has optical)

    sounds like its set to output the audio through HDMI.

    go to the settings category on the PS3 XMB > sound settings > Output (i think) and adjust the settings in there
