  • A lack of vit b is a common reason for this - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riboflavin

Of course it could be anything and it would be worth checking in with your pharmacist or GP...but according to the wikipedia article the sources of vit B are quite tasty so it's probably worth upping them in any case :)

I had this problem a little while back - went into Boots and the pharmacist said it is a very common problem especially in winter as it is the wind and cold on the skin causing it to tear and preventing it healing. she recommended vaseline, which I used when going out to create a barrier, but I ended up using a little Estee Lauder Night Repair and it healed in two nights....a tiny amount worked so you could probably make do with a sample pot if necessary!

I was lucky to get an appointment with my doctor early this morning (seriously impressed by that, no, it wasn't an emergency one). After explaining my woes, I was diagnosed with...(drum rollllllllllllllllll please)....Angular Cheilitis (I understand many names and spellings), as suggested by you clever people.

I have been prescribed a three in one cream of anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and steroid. I've also forked out for a mouthwash to deal with the ever growing mouth ulcer, Aloclair from Boots, expensive but worth every penny! (In true MSE style I collected the points on my reward card too.) I looked at the gel option but decided it was too much hard work to apply properly as the entire floor of my mouth is now inflamed.

Having read your posts, I've gone out and bought a Vit. B supplement. I normally pooh, pooh wikipedia but have to say it's spot on about the eyes, "The eyes may also become bloodshot, itchy, watery and sensitive to bright light." Yep, that’s me at the moment. I just sound soooo attractive don’t I? :o

I will certainly keep in mind all the creams mentioned so I have other options in the future. I might even buy a small jar of Marmite too.

Although I feel pants physically, your kindness is a wonderful way to start the New Year and means a great deal to me.

I cannot thank everyone enough for helping me out :hello: ,

Sounds like angular stomatitis - there are lots of causes, some of which have been mentioned.

Try getting yourself some vioform-hydrocortisone cream - that should clear up any bacterial or yeast infection and reduce the inflammation. If it doesn't work, and you're still in pain after a week, go see your GP.

  • If I get internal mouthsores I find they heal very quickly when I take a zinc supplement; external i.e. lip corner, try a B complex supplement.
