Most of the well know magazines have at least some online reviews:

When you start to shortlist then doing searches on google for the specific model is easy and finds even more reviews.

Most recently, I can recommend the Toshiba A100 and the Sony VAIO B1VP as offering good all round value and very nice to use. Both include XP Pro.

I am thinking of ditching my PC and going for a laptop, and am very interested in all the comment on this thread, but just thought, does a DVD re-writer also copy CD's?

Yes dvd recorders do record cd's - well all the one's that i have seen do anyway.
