Have you ever considerd that in order to be paid for all the time that is spent going around quoting for work that they have a 1 in 10 or 15 chance of winning, constractors have to add huge amounts to their tenders. Self perpetuating, people drive there own prices higher.0

I must admit that clients are more informed these days, the problem is that some are ill-informed.
I am fortunate to get most of my work from word of mouth now, so can seperate the wheat from the chaff before the quoting stage
Lady called last week 'just for a price'. I asked her when she wanted the work done as I prefer to go and look at anything over a couple of hours.
' I just want a price' was the reply
I asked if she wanted the work done before the middle of the next week.
'yes'
I said thanks for calling but I won't manage to do the job in time so won't be able to quote
No point going to a job, giving a price and then saying I'm not doing it. You waste everyones time
I also prefer not to quote where there are lots of contractors quoting as I know of a few who are 'not super' to put it mildly. They will give a very cheap quote, but have a habit of not returning calls when anything untoward happens

I know this thread is old but....
Couldn't agree more here. We waited a year for the builder we wanted to do our single storey extension as he had so much work on. He was very close to the most expensive quote but came so highly recommended we wanted him to do the work.
We are so glad we did, he is completely managing the project, keeps us informed daily and is going out of his way to minimise our internal disruption (we are moving the kitchen from the main house to the extension and installing a downstairs toilet so we were prepared for disruption).
Recommendations are really the only way to go when you are spending this amount of money...0
