Who has 'premium bonds' these days?

Hi,

My mum has some premium bonds from as far back as 40 years ago , and whilst they are not gaining interest (okay - I appreciate the rates are so low currently..), she's just told me that she won twice in all that time - approx. £50 each = £100.

Somehow, I think she might have 'achieved' more - especially now that ISAs are available.

Just wondering how many others have ever had premium bonds, whether anyone actually won, and / or were tempted to cash in and reinvest elsewhere?

Thanks!

The only people that should invest in PBs are:

    - Those that like a 'free' lottery
    - Those that have used up all over tax free options with no other better rated options available

Then there are some people who think they are great even if they are losing money on them. (losing money in terms of value)
  • I had quite a few till recently and did better than savings rate but sold most of them.
I looked at the list of 'big' winners last month ,which goes down to £5k,ridiculously short, used to be several pages long
Still think theyre better than the tax on the poor 'lotto' and scratchcards
Always tickled me when someone with £5 won £10k,jammy bu**ers

I seem to be doing OK with them and you never know... £1m!!!

If you or your mum are unhappy with the returns - sell them.

For the last 2 years both myself and my wife have received around 8-9% returns. Each of us holds around £4000. I'm sure that the new % rates will reduce our winnings, but we'll hang in there until it looks worst than we can get from any other investment.
  • £50 x 33
    £100 x 8
    £1,000 x 1

Held various amounts over the last 4 years.

Going to hang on to them for a while longer.
  • I buy £100 per month by direct debit, have about £700 so far, still waiting to win.................
:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:
  • Held £3,000 since February this year and won 1x £100 and 1 x £50 and will hang on to them until forced to sell for some unforeseen reason :)
  • I have a small percentage of my savings in them, and as long as you're aware of what you're getting into, and what you're likely to get out (or not), then it's a brief bit of fun at the start of every month.

I wish they would do the sensible thing though, and drop the second £1million prize to distribute it among quite a few more winners, even more so now the rates have dropped significantly.
  • I've got £8000 worth which gave me about £500 this year (mostly £50 and £100)

My Mom brought £30,000 worth in November 08 (in multiples of £5000 6 times) she got £100 on December 15

The more you have the better chances you have at getting bigger prizes
