You think it's worth an email to their head office?
    It's only 20-odd pence

Have you not just answered your own question?

there was a sign in the manchester one today saying as from the 26th december everything in store, reflected the new VAT, i asked the women as it was non sale stuff i was buying to. and she said yes this is correct from now on we wont be taking VAT off at the till, the price on the item is the price you pay. so really now put there price up by 2.5%.

i thought the whole point in cutting the vat rate was to encourage people to spend more? arent they going to put our taxes up to cover the cut too? why should we pay more taxes if were not benefiting from the cut ?
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.

  • You will be paying 15% vat, they may be increasing the wages in the Thai sweat shop by 2.5% hence the increase in price from last week.

Did you really think that shops would not go back to 99p or £x.00? In a few months all shops will be back to 99p and .00 in their pricing.

I agree, kind of, my husband has just had a rise of 3% so his employers prices are going to increase and they will charge their customers more, so their customers are going to get charged more and their customers are going to get charged more..... the costs have to be incorporated into retail prices somewhere aong the way so prices will go up, however, rather than increasing the price of something by 50p it'll probably now 'stay the same' and the tills will start charging the correct price. This does not mean that the VAT has not been passed on but that the retailer has been able to keep their goods at the same price. That is good - for now!

When the rate goes up to 22.5% (as I personally think it will to cover up for this huge mistake in a cut) there is going to be a lot more confusion as retailer will have ticketed prices at 15% VAT and an additional 7.5% will have to be added on so the correct VAT rate is charged and the company does not lose this money. However, the retailer is not going to be able to charge more than the ticketed price (not SEL, this is different and 'invitation to treat' so the till can charge the extra) and will put their prices up in September to take account of the possible new rate that will be introduced. Or the ticket/SEL prices soon will all be shown excluding VAT like they are in the US, so the additional VAT gets added on at the till. I personally think that come September some retailers will start to implement this systems and it is going to be confusing for everyone on the high street where people will think they are getting a bargain - until they get to the till. But I cannot see any alternative, it is going to cripple the retailer who has to take a 7.5% loss on every single ticketed item in the shop. Where as now everyone is EXPECTING to pay less, will people be EXPECTING to pay more? No, of course they will not, they will be expecting to pay the ticketed price for things.

2009 is going to bring huge changes for the retail sector and not all of them for the good!!

Bought some mens undies today. Not in the sale, just normal priced up stock - £16.

Huge poster next to the till - VAT reduction will be deducted at the checkout

Woman scans them through and asks me for the full ticket amount. I point out the poster and she says the reduction has already been done in the stickered price (!). I mention that I bought an identical pack a couple of months ago and it was £16 then too. She wanders over to ask her colleague.. then comes back and says no, the price is correct, £16.

It's only 20-odd pence.. but they shouldn't have big posters claiming they're reduced the VAT when they obviously haven't.

take it to trading standards as the poster is misleading (from the information you have given me).

It's all very well saying "stop moaning as it's only 20-odd pence" but just imagine if this was a much higher priced item. Alastair Darling cut the VAT rate to encourage spending and even though I personally don't think it will do that, if the shops aren't even passing that cut on then it DEFINITELY won't do that. If a cut has been made the shops should have passed it on. For those saying that the shop might have increased staff costs, bit of a coincidence that staff costs have gone up as VAT just came down, eh?
