Driver Agent - is it a scam?

I downloaded Driver Agent (free) to check that all my drivers were up to date. It reports several needing updates. The program will do this for you if you pay for it. This could be a sensible option for some less experienced people.
I decided to check with Windows Device Manager (in Control Panel, System)
This told me that the drivers reported were up to date.

My question is: Is Driver Agent a scam to make you pay for their product even when there is no need? Or is there a simple explanation?

I tried that and got rid of it almost as fast!
Use the Windows Update facility which, AFAIK, does the same thing.
Why pay for something that you can get for free?

  • I could be way off the mark here but I'd assume Driver Agent has a repository of drivers from manufactures' sites as opposed to the limited selection of drivers on MS Windows Update site.

To be honest I wouldn't bother with Driver Agent and just find the appropriate http / ftp page from my laptop's manufacture e.g. for mine, Acer it'd be: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html

Just to note I would still run a Windows Update after though.

I used Driver Agent for about 5 minutes, it gave me a load of drivers to update and then tried to charge me for membership.
Got rid of it after that.

There seem to be a few people out there who reckon it's not worth paying for. E.g.
