New Gas Central heating Install (firsttime buyers)

Hi All,

We are first time buyers and we managed to pick up a 3 bed semi in need of renovation. It has never had central heating and therefore the Plumber will be starting from scratch.

We are in the South East, on the Hamsphire/Surrey border just off the M3. So far we have had just one quote from a plumber but it looks quite steep compaired to some of the other quotes we've seen on the forum, is it fair ?

This includes a manufacturer's 2 year warranty.

  • Hiya

Friend & I (he's corgi) just quoted £2200 for completely new GCH system, in a 2 bed 1st storey apartment in Edinburgh. For an additional radiator add on around £125-ish. This included taking out the old warm air system, and was around 3 days work.

We got pipped on price as the landlord went for a quote at £1900:eek: , and we thought we were cheap. There are good prices out there, so try & get a recommendation, make sure you get plenty of quotes, make sure the installer is corgi reg'd, try & get like for like boiler comparisons (ie same make & model), etc, etc

Seems about right to me, considering the area, the chasing and the 1st fix stuff.

However, I would try and squeeze a 27/30CDI out of him for that money. The 'i' is the bottom of the range of 3 models that WB do.
  • In the summer we had a new boiler (OPTIMAX 31H S)
    9 New thermostatic radiators
    1 small heated towel rail
2 large chrome heated towels rails
New pump and thermostat plus a booster to move hot water around more quickly
Old stuff taken away. Existing under floor pipes used
    Cost £4100 in Essex

British Gas quoted about £1700 more
I think your quote is OK but I would get some more and haggle. Try to get them to under £5000

Good evening: Your quote is an accurate reflection of the charges for installing a new central heating system in Surrey: however, I would expect copper pipework for that price and specify a better boiler (eg. Viessmann- stainless steel heat exchanger) with a longer parts and labour warranty. The OH would also fit a Boiler Buddy, scale inhibitor, good trvs (eg. Drayton TRV4) and lag all relevant pipework with Part L compliant insulation where required. A combi will require good mains pressure/flow rates...make sure whoever does the install tests this.

  • Brilliant folks thanks for your help.

Really appreciate your detailed reply Canucklehead :)

We also want to Run a mixer shower from this Combi, so we should really push for a better boiler then ?

    Thanks

Good morning: You're welcome;) Flow rate will increase with the kilowatt output of your boiler...see an example on page 3 (technical summary).
