Toys R us - Are they going under too?

Just been to my local one, and there is very low levels of stock in some departments, they are not taking any gift cards for payments, and when i asked the Till assistant about the low levels of stock he went bright red and just ignored me. He then muttered somehting about this store always meeting their targets! When i said it was not the store but the chain, he went even redder! Hmmmmmm

Low levels of stock are to expected during sales, but it is possible that your branch is shutting rather than the whole company going bust, I've certainly not seen any reports to suggest that they are in any imminent danger, but the giftcard situation is admittedly a first sign of trouble sometimes.

I've been to my local toys r us today and was asked by the lady at the door if I was paying by giftcard, it also didn't seem to have much stock. Luckily the kids had spent theirs the day before but my youngest still had some cash left to spend hence the trip today.

The fact they are not taking payment by gift card doesn't sound good.
However stock levels are always low at Toys R Us at this time of year. I discovered a fair few years ago that they do a stock take in January and they don't get stock in until after they have done the stock take. My DD has a birthday early January and I soon learnt that if I wanted something for her birthday buy it before Christmas. This may have something to do with low stock but the bit about gift cards make me wonder.
  • Yeah, it was the gift card situation that really made me question it. I did expect stock leves to be low, but some shelves were empty, and for example, the board game section had been filled up with ropey looking remote control cars. It just seemed to be a bit worse than they normally are this time of year.

I hope they are not going under but it would not surprise me as they do seem to be so expensive for some things, but they are the only toy shop in the whole of my Town, if they go there will only be the likes of the supermarkets and Argos left!

I'm sure that any trouble would have hit the news by now, especially with a company this big, so maybe they are just having trouble processing gift vouchers? Has anyone actually asked why they are refusing the vouchers?

I dont think they will close they only just revamped the southampton and portsmouth store.

That doesn't really mean anything, our Woolworths had a refit at the end of November.

All branches accept gift cards usually, that link tells you nothing other than where you local store is. The problem seems to be that, for whatever reason, Toys R Us have implemented a general policy of non-acceptance.
