Barclays Bank - Watch Out!

Options
Letter received 30th December, dated 23rd December.

Says that im overdrawn and so charged me a whopping £22 Reserve Usage Fee.

The letter says i have 5 days to get the account back into credit before im charged another £22

When i rang (30th) they said i have until tomorrow to get the account back as the 5 days were up, how is this fair as i received it today? when i explained this they kept refering back to 'policy' over and over.

I asked if they would consider waivering the £22 charge if i could find the money today and they again said no (i've heard banks often allow for a slight dip in funds if the person is in good credit most of the time (not been in overdraft with them at all!!! (6 years been with them))

Seems a bit unjust, giving me a few hours to find the money :(

  • Not much help I'm afraid.
But the Reserve letter did tell you this. Also Barclays computer can hardly tell it's Christmas and the post is going to be delayed. Would you rather it sent the letter out before you went into the Reserve so you got it in time?

Barclays staff used to be able to refund upto a certain amount at their discretion. Now I believe that right has been taken away since the terms and conditions changed.

All you can do is deposit the amount you are overdrawn by, the £22 and some extra in the account today. If you can't then you will be charged another £22.

Do you not have online banking with Barclays. If you did you could've seen 5+ days ago that you were going to go overdrawn. It's not what you want to hear but ultimately it is your own fault.
  • i know this but its christmas, i havent had the time to check my account as often as i do normally due to trying to run a business and being busy at this time of the year, i know the computer isnt that smart but surely they could delay the charge by a day or two to allow for this, its hardly fair
  • I got a letter today from Barclays too detailing a £22 Reserve Usage Fee that I had been charged for being OD on the 23rd. Due to Christmas money didn't replenish the account till the 29th.

Never been overdrawn ever and I've been with Barclays since day dot! Have logged a complaint with Customer Services ... see what happens ...
  • Totally Broke.

Why shouldn't a computer know it's Christmas? It sounds like a badly programmed computer.

i logged a complaint also, we'll see i guess, annoyingly if i had an arranged overdraft facility on it, the interest charge would have been less!

Let me guess: you didn't read the mailings we sent out in June and July, in advance of Personal Reserve coming in?
    What would William Shatner do?

If you get a reply that sounds as though it's canned and ends with a line about your request for a refund being declined, that's because it is canned - I wrote that. :)

You know all those unspeakable things people shout when they open one of those letters? That's you, that is. ;)

I loved working in Customer Relations. You got the brilliance of being able to put things right when they genuinely had gone wrong, and then the satisfaction of telling people that no, they weren't going to get their £35,000 compensation for a missing cheque (true example #1) or that we weren't going to accept an invoice from them where they billed their time as being worth £80 an hour (true example #2).

I'm with Stormbalder on this one - Computers/electronic systems do what the people who are using them tell them to. Barclays is run by *people*, who are well aware it's Christmas...WE have to accept that normal banking services aren't available over Christmas period, it would be nice if these things worked both ways...ok I'm off to take the crazy pills now teehee :)
