Fixing a slow wireless connection

I use a wireless connection on my laptop and my OH's pc is connected via a cable (usb i think).

The electric ran out this morning and since it went back on at just before half 9am, I have not been able to get my laptop to connect to more than one page at a time if that. Its reporting connection speeds at 11, 12, 24, 36 mbps which is just not high enough to do anything with. It needs to be at the 54 level to function fully.

I've tried repairing network/wireless connection.
I've rebooted laptop.
I've rebooted router (bt router, the new black one that they do)

There is a fault on the line (OH mum works for BT n has told us this) that needs fixing but wireless was working just fine before electric went off. OH pc is working just fine still as well (this is the one Im using at the moment)

Any ideas ?

Is the line fault internal or external?

Have you tried removing the fascia panel from the master socket (bt phone line) & plugging you line in straight to the exchange to see if you have the same fault.

I would do a cold start on every bit of eqpt - modem / router / PC's etc
turn them off for at least 30 seconds then turn them on from order of connection from your ISP (Modem > Router > PC )

I'm finally back online on my own laptop after changing the black bt modem for the white bt modem. The phone line is still bit crackly so I think its the filters that need changing back to the other ones and then it should be fine. BT say the line is an internal one (something to do with our equipment in the house).

Not for being online it doesn't. Unless you're on ADSL2+ sat right next to the exchange or on Virgin Medias new high speed service, non of the above speeds will be lower than your broadband connection and certainly nowhere near slow enough to cause page load issues.

Virgin have told me that I am capable of receiving 5-6 mb but I am only receiving 1.1, I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router. I have asked Virgin for their help but I am still waiting. Can anyone point me in the right direction are there any settings that might need changing on my PC, it is a HP PC about 6 years old?

I'm not clear if your using ADSL or cable, but I've just upgraded the firmware of my Netgear router and seen a dramatic increase in broadband speed. I suggest that you go to www.netgear.co.uk and follow links to support, or use http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834G.asp as this will take you to the right place. Follow instructions and you should see an improvement.

    Best of luck!

No it only took a few minutes to do following the instructions and then the router was updated and the speed improved.

I have updated the Router's firmware (thanks Splot), but the speed is still the same I have rebooted the PC and router.
Here are my current Router details:
ADSL Firmware Version7.03.01.66Modem StatusConnectedDownStream Connection Speed1152 kbpsUpStream Connection Speed288 kbpsVPI0VCI38

Is my PC slowing things down and if so can it be tweeked to improve things?
It is a HP Pavilion 463 standard spec apart from extra RAM.
    Thanks

Thanks for your quick response, I will buy an extension lead and do the check as the socket is downstairs and the PC, which is wired to the router is located upstairs.
