I have been given a Severin yoghurt maker for Christmas which is great. However, the instructions are a little brief and there are no recipies given.
It advises to put in 1 to 2 teaspoons of "natural" yoghurt in each individual container and then mix with milk. Does this "natural" youghurt need to be of the "live" variety or will any "natural" yoghurt do such as Rachel's Organic
Can I use any type of milk like goats milk? what milk makes the best yoghurt? And what do others mix in to their yoghurts when they are finally set?
Finally, when made, how long are they okay for?
Hopefully some of you can help me out :T
I am off to put my bread in the panny now (that's something I do now have the hang of! :j )

Hi Creme Brulee.
I also got a yogurt maker for Christmas! Very exciting.
You definitely need to start with live yogurt. Just a cheap one will do as long as it's live. It's really not going to make much difference to the taste in the end. Of course once you have made one batch you can keep a bit of it back to use as the base for the next lot.
I have only ever used standard cows milk to make the yogurt and to be honest I have no idea if other kinds of milk would work. Why not experiment with other kinds to see if they work and what you like best (obviously in small quantities in case it goes wrong!).
Once made I think it should last as long as any other yogurt - maybe around 5 days? I live by myself so find it better to make small quantities more frequently so that it doesn't go off. I have started eating yogurt every day for my lunch now. Live yogurt is supposed to be very good for you!
I usually eat mine with some chopped up fruit (whatever I have) but it's also good with purees and compotes or even just with a bit of brown sugar sprinkled on top. It also goes well with most cakes and desserts.
I hope some of that helps. I'd be interested to hear how you get on if you do try some other kinds of milk.0
