Logitech Driving Force Pro & Colin McRae Dirt for PS3

Hello
I'm hoping that somebody clever can help me please? My son received Colin McRae Dirt for the PS3 for Christmas (he's 7). He had previously had this game for the Xbox360 and loved it, and so we thought it a good idea to get it for the PS3 has he now has the above mentioned steering wheel to play with too.
But it's really disappointing for him... the steering wheel is so "stiff" that he can't drive with it at all. We're assuming that it's the game that's the problem as his F1 Championship game drives/works perfectly well. We've tried tweaking the set up and can either make it really loose or stiff but nothing in between that's useable.
Anybody have similar problems and know how to solve it?
