aarghh forgot to pay bill on time-nationwide?

so  at self. After paying my Amex twice earlier this month, I just realised I hadn't paid my nationwide gold card bill, minimum payment was due on the 27th (saturday), what with christmas, working and generally being sick and having a hectic life, I just completely forgot :mad:
I have just transferred the money from my flex account, so it will be in tomorrow (30th) and sent a very grovelling message apologising, and asking if I will be charged any late payment fees, and if so would it be possible to have them waived?
What do you think my chances are? Have never ever ever missed a payment, I just completely forgot about it :(
I pay the balance in full usually, and have just transferred the full amount over. I dont use it every month, so hadn't bothered to set up a direct debit

I have had a couple of late payments waived in the past by Barclaycard when I was ill and in hospital. They could see by my payment history that it was abnormal, and I wrote to explain, as I usually paid the full amount every month. This was some time ago though, and I am not sure how CC companys will react over credit crunch Xmas 08.

With a Nationwide Flex account it is easy to set up payments when you receive the bill. As soon as I get my Barclaycard statement, I set up a payment to go from my Flex account on the due date Barclaycard state, which is about 3 weeks ahead, so don't worry about it going out on time. You should have a card reader to do this.

Print off the payment details when setting this up every month, so that if there is a balls up by Nationwide, you have details of the transaction being done and when it should have been paid to show to your CC company. None of this takes more then a few minutes and is so easy. Better then any DD I have had in the past, and keeps you in control of your finances.

  • Thanks, they have waived the fee :D
I only ever use the card abroad,so will set up a DD, or do as you suggest above (thats what I do with my Halifax card)

I've always used DD for everything. All payments are set to leave my account within the first few days of the month (90% are on the 1st), whilst I'm paid by work on the 26th of the month. I always check over my statements which come about two weeks before the payment is taken, so I have my chance to ensure it is correct.

I don't understand how it can be any better doing it all manually?

    (a) If you pay your cards from multiple accounts, so you don't necessarily want the DD to leave the same account every month.

    (b) If you get paid at sporadic intervals (e.g. self employed) and you want to control when the money leaves your account rather than risking a DD bouncing.

I agree that for most people with a single current account and regular wages, the DD is best way.
