Temporerily disable dial up to download updates?

I'm just looking a workmates pc at my place, uninstalling old apps, running spyware, malware etc. I want to temporerily disable his dial up connection and hook the pc up to my broadband connection via an ethernet cable.
I've plugged the canble in, enabled it under network connections and its acquired the ip, but when I try to go into the internet explorer the damn dial up box still pops up! How can I disable it so that I can get all the updates his PC needs and revert it to dial up when I'm done??

Sorted it. Went to internet options>connections and selected "Dial whenever a network connection is not present".0
