I went to my local branch and they didn't have anyone available to open the account. But, the did phone the another local branch to see if anyone was available.

And, yes, so I went down to the branch and opened it with no problems.

    Thanks Martin. :money:

Interest paid over period: 31 Dec - 01 Jan (both dates inclusive)
Number of days of earning interest: 2

    Gross interest = £250 * 7.49% * 2/365 = £0.1026 ≈ £0.10 (rounded off)

    Tax: £0.10 * 20% = £0.02

    Net interest: £0.10 - £0.02 = £0.08

Hence, like me, you got the rate of 7.75% (which is 7.49% gross)

I got exactly the same 8p interest so looks like the 7.75% has been applied too. Good news and many thanks for the really helpful postings on this thread.
  • For what it's worth, having read Martin's email last week, I tried to open a savings account at my local Barclays branch last week (31 December), but was told categorically that the 7.75% interest rate had ended at the end of November, and there was no way I would be able to open an account with that rate of interest. The clerk said I was the second person who had come in that day expecting to get this interest rate, and he would 'quite like to meet this Martyn Lewis'. I telephoned Barclays CS on 2nd Jan., and explained the situation. The agent was very helpful and apologised for the confusion. He took my details, and promised to initiate a complaint on my behalf. I suppose I should have opened the account anyway, but the chap at my local branch was so adamant that he was right, there seemed no point in going ahead. Anyway, I wait with bated breath to see whether they will retrospectively allow me to open an account!

"We apologise that there has been some confusion around this but we can assure all customers who opened a Monthly Savings account and made their first deposit on or before the 31st December that they will get the 7.75% fixed rate"

So if what Mark said above is true, and I opened this saver account on the 31st Dec at 5pm, and shifted £250 at the same time from my barclays current account, I should be eligiable for the 7.75%, cause I went in the branch with my email confirmation yesterday (6th Jan), but they said I will still only get 6%, as 7.75% ended in Nov, I AM GETTING MORE CONFUSED BY MARKS PARSONS, don't people at the top communitcate this down.

If I take a print out of what Mark said to the branch do I stand a chance of getting 7.75% still?

I opened the Monthly Savings Account on the 31/12 using online banking as usual Barclays dragged their feet and opened the account on the 05/01/09. What a joke, I waited 3 months for the Tax Haven ISA which I didn't get interest for and now I've missed out on this, probably change my current acc to A/L now

Hi I also opened the accounto n 31st Dec after reading about it on MSE. I have an email conformation at 3pm on 31/12/08.

I made the first payment 31/12/08, and the first standing order 31/12/08.

Yet the first payment came out 5 Jan, and the standing order first payment 6 Jan.

Does anyone know where we stand with this?

    Hi all

Just received a letter today from Barclays (Complaints department) saying that as my account was opened and funded by the 31st december 08, i will get 7.75%.

Shame it had to come to complaining to get an answer.
