  • I hope you realise that the PS3 plays Blue Ray DVD's and not HD DVD's.

I presume so now as I don't think Mamma Mia made it to HD DVD.

    Goto the display settings
Whatever the max ouput it can do automatically with a viewable picture is more than likely the max the tv will allow (not ALWAYS the case though)
So its possible the PS3 is outputting blu rays to 1080P but your tv cant process them?
    What tv do you have?

  • yes , sorry guys blue ray discs not HD , like I said I`m no expert .

    It`s a wharfedale W42S40PE plasma and I`ve tried display settings at 576 , 720 , 1080i and 1080p but none of them work

I`ve given up and simply connected it by scart

Looks like TV can`t actually support HDMI for films then . . . . . . ? Strange how it plays games OK though

If your telly is the same as this one (http://www.jellydeal.co.uk/wharfedale-w42s40pe-42in-plasma-tv.htm) then it only has a resolution of up to 852 x 480. If there's no HDMI socket on the back then it probably isn't HD ready so you won't get the full benefits of HD yet.

hhmmmmm, is you PS3 connected to the internet and fully upto date with the latest software?

I am not sure what the latest version is but the PS3 will tell you, there is a system update function on the menu system (towards the left of the menu and a few options up i think)

It maybe a copyright protection thing and new software needed.

I'm not familar with that model of TV, is it marked "HD Ready" (usually on the front frame and manual) or was it an early model before the full standard was agreed?

  • There`s an HDMI socket on back of TV and it was advertised as HD ready when I bought it 2 years ago . can`t see any mention of HD ready marked on the telly now though

My next task is to get it connected to the internet , something else I`ve been struggling with ! I`ve got an Orange livebox and now having problems connecting to it ! Aw man , it`s not easy being me !

I think you misunderstood what I said
If the PS3 will DISPLAY anything at all through the hdmi, then thats fine
Whats the highest resolution the screen actually works?
If it works on 720P then select that (it should do ~ if not set to 576P)
Then goto VIDEO SETTINGS (near the top)
Set BD/DVD UPSCALER to OFF (For now)
    and
BD 1080P 24Hz to OFF (Which should prevent it trying to play at 1080P which is why I believe you cant see the picture)

I have, from time to time, had a problem were the TV shows a blank screen yet you can hear audio. This is not tied with movies, just sometimes when I switch the console on no video output is there. The solution to this is simply switching the television off and then turning it on. If that doesn't work, unplug your HDMI cable, plug it back in, and try that. Check the connection at the back of your console. If none of that works, try another bluray disc as I did read somewhere that some bluray films are not compatible with the PS3, hence the sticker on front of some movies saying PS3 compatible. Never had such a problem with any bluray films of mine, both bought and rented. Though you never know it might not work.

As for update packages, I don't have mine connected all the time and the last update I got was about two or three months ago. My latest games such as Resistence 2 and Bond's new game both work without a problem. Likewise the films Hellboy 2 and The Dark Knight both work without a problem. I also believe that the update packages are tied only with the game play and online play. Not the movies.

If your TV is HD ready it should play bluray movies without a problem. There should be no hitch in playing movies. Just check your connections, turn your TV off and on and if that doesn't work. Try another bluray movie and if that doesn't work then the only other thing as mention is try switching your resolution. You could also try resetting your console via the system restore function. That way it simply restores your console to factory settings and you can set things up again, if that doesn't work then ring Sony's support centre and see what they advise you to do. As it could be something I have never had to do with my console or know how to do. So they could solve it for you. But it could also be a problem with your console, though I can't see that with it being brand new.
