Bluetooth / Laptop Question

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am looking to get a new laptop; my current one has a bluetooth button, which only works with a bluetooth dongle that I bought. Will this dongle allow any laptop to use bluetooth, or do I need to find one specifically bluetooth-enabled? I've been looking at Dell, who have options to add bluetooth to their laptop at extra cost, but unsure if this is necessary.
