Mould problems!!

Options
Hi all,

I have lived in my new two bed flat for about 8 months. However, we are currently dealing with quite a large mould and mildew problem.
We have brought some cleaner, but it would appear it takes paint off the walls! Not good!!

So, can any one please tell me a good substance mix to use on stubborn mould on walls and window frames??

Thank you!!

  • I bought Mould Cleaner by a company called HG from a flooring chain - HG also makes cleaning products for tiles/marble/slate floors etc. I got mine from Topps Tiles but you can go to any supplier I suspect.

Anyway its expensive (£9 I think) and I've had it for 2 yerars. It is bacically the stuff they clean pools with. You spray it on, it stinks, and the mould disappears.

I can recommend it but you also need to find out why you have the mould and you can buy mould resistant paints but its possible there is a drain or guttering not functioning properly.

Good luck and keep the windows wide open when using these cleaners and a mask!
  • I use Dettox Mould and Mildew remover, so far it has not taken off any paint.

Hi roadrash, I wouldn't want to depress you but mould/mildew is only a sympton - you need to find and treat the cause. Inadequate ventilation? dodgy guttering? leaking downpipes? damaged masonry?. good luck
  • Hi
Erin is right - I have a rental property and there has been very bad mould there - so I have become a mould expert. It is mostly caused by inadequate ventilation e.e. not opening a window when you have been cooking or showering. If you see condensation on the window this is a bad sign and you need to ventilate. The mould spores grow and multiply and they feed in dusty conditions so cleaning and getting rid of the spores is essential...I think that I have just about conquered the problem in my property. You could ask the landlord for airbricks and window vents in the bathrooms and to buy a dehumidifier which extracts the water vapour. It is unlikely that the mould has an external cause as penetrating damp is different. Good luck
  • You say your flat is only 8 months old and due to lot of water being used in the construction of new homes and on top of that the building will have been subject to the elements during its construction, it takes a long time to fully dry out.

It may be an idea to hire a dehumidifyer to speed up this process if condensation is a problem.

Also check in your wardrobes, I know of people who find their clothes at the back of cupboards have turned mouldy!

We use to live in a two bedroom flat up until November and had the same problem.

Our mould was mainly in the main bedroom and we had people out to it over and over, who kept telling me that we did not have damp in the walls but it was all over the walls and on the backs of the furniture and on clothes etc.

We were told bleach works just as well as mould cleaners to get rid of it.

We also found out that the cause of the problem was the bathroom which was situated next to the main bedroom, the steam from baths/showers was getting around the flat and to make sure that even while running the bath etc that the door was firmly shut and that the fan was on.

Also the air vents in the windows need to be kept open at all times or the air can't get out especially in the room you sleep in.

Also do you dry clothes on the radiators or use a dryer as these can both cause damp and mould problems.

Hope this helps as i know what a misery mould can be and the smell it gives off is sickening.
