Vista Business to Vista Ultimate

`Hi

I am just about to upgrade from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate and need a bit more disc space.

I have 1.75gb free on C drive and 7.5gb free on D Drive.

When I try to go through the upgrade process I am told I do not have have enough free disc space to carry out the upgrade.

Does anybody know how much disc space I need and the easiest way to free up some disc space D to C.

Thanks

Martin

Thanks for the reply, I will have a proper read when I get home.

I suppose what I really need to do is buy some software to shrink the D drive and make C drive bigger.

I am running an Acer laptop and I have a feeling there is some space on the drives not showing and I could get some space from those areas.

In Vista go to Computer Management and under Storage go to Disk Management, you can shrink and extend volumes through that.

In addition, do disk cleanup, select more options and select clean up under the system restore section.
  • Hi

    Thanks for the replies.

I have tried changing the disk size using the vista tools but it does not give me anu options to change the size.

Also there is a further 4.5gb that is shown with no name, only that it is EISA compatable.

I ran the upgrade advisor as well and that says I need 15gb of free space, which I know is not correct.

I thought the upgrade would be simple, oh well.

perhaps compress a few directories/disk might be easier?
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • Hi

If I compress a few directories/disks, will that damage anything?

If I do that, is it a case of compressing and then restoring after I upgrade?

Thanks for all the help so far by the way.

Have you done what Conor suggested?

Do you clear out temp files?

Do you have any junk left on the PC from when you bought it that you can delete?

Can you temporarily transfer any data to an external hard drive and dvd as a back up, then delete from the computer?

Not the way I was thinking. I'm on XP, so I can only tell you the XP way, but I'm 99% sure vista still will have the same option, but possibly not in the same location.

Just go into explorer right click on the drive letter and choose Properties, under the General tab there is 'Compress drive to save disk space' tick box. There will be some files which do not compress - skip them (this is normal).

It may make your PC slower, but most people do not notice the difference, and you could always uncompress later.

Download CCleaner. Install, but exclude the Yahoo Toolbar when offered.

    Analyze and Run.

Next, download and run; WinDirStat Use the tool to see what is on your HDD and to remove unwanted items.

What are the capacities of the partitions C: & D:?
