Tiny holes developed in bed mattress

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help with this odd problem - I've done several searches online and cannot find any answers.
I was taking the sheet off the bed today and noticed lots of tiny holes on the mattress - mostly at the foot and the head of the bed. They are the size of a pin head. I use a mattress protector and hadn't noticed the holes until today. We regularly turn the mattress as recommended by the manufacturer and wash the sheets regularly. We've not had any problems with bed bugs or dust mites or any wee beasties for that matter!
The mattresss was bought around 3 years ago and was very expensive and is still as comfy as the day we got it- the bed frame was bought at the same time.
Can anyone suggest what this might be? Is it wear and tear? It seems rather odd. I'd appreciate any help you can give!

Could it be clothes moth larvae?

Thanks rhiwfield. Not sure if it could be - the article talks of them being between 1/4 and 1/2 an inch in size, really have seen no debris or trace of insects at all. I'm keeping an open mind though - it's a weird one!Are we still waiting to sing as hummingbirds?0

I couldnt get this problem out of my head so if it isnt something obvious what could it be
Some oddball and some logical ideas below and I'd love to know the real answer if and when you find out what caused it- Some mechanical interaction between bed frame and mattress e.g. exposed ends of metal supports
- Some natural defect in mattress fabric
- Some interaction between mattress cover and innards (kept thinking of capillary foam inner under pressure releasing tiny airflows!)
- Pin head size holes? Any chance of frame having woodworm and the little blighters kept going thru the mattress?
- You dont have a cat that likes to test its claws?
- Adolescent children using mattress as backing for a dartboard?
- Someone practicing voodoo with knitting needles?
