Will the council buy my house?

At the moment my parents live with me and have done for several tears. Now I want to live seperately with my children and partner. Could i sell my house to the council and would they be willing to allow my parents to stay in the property and pay rent. I think the other alternative would be for them to be placed in temporary accomodation as housing is in short supply in our area.

I doubt the council would buy your house, and your parents certainly wouldn't be able to remain in there in there as they may be others in greater need, it would be unfair for those on a waiting list if your parents had first choice
  • I though it unlikely. Thanks for reply.

Were you thinking of those council rental schemes? They may well want to use your property to rent to others and they are obliged to keep it in good order. Rental amount would vary but don't expect a huge amount. And as others have said, your parents would not be permitted to be the tenants.

Housing Associations do buy properties, however, priority for letting is given to the general housing list and your parents wont be at the top of that. Also be aware that the price offered will reflect changes and improvements that need to be done to the home to bring it in line with HA standards. The houses need to "pay back" over a certain number of years so you probably wouldnt get the best price for your home, but you would get a quick sale.

OH is a development manager for a HA and he gets dozens of calls like this a week.

 Who is OH please I would like to learn more about this possibility.

I've recently been made redundant and currently I am not in trouble with my mortgage but I am pretty certain I will be in the very near future.

I am disabled (I have MS) and suffering with depression. I don't want to lose my house but I was looking to find out more about selling my home to an HA (if that is possible) and to then renting it back from them. so I don't have to move. Is this possible?

I have, this year, received a grant from my Council and they have knocked down my old showerroom and rebuilt a larger wetroom and lobby to help me because of my disability (can only live on my ground floor now as I cannot use my stairs because of the disability) so would really like to carrying on living here but at the moment there are so many forms to fill in, worrying about my redundancy money running out before I start to get into trouble with my mortgage and I'm pretty certain that the Government won't pay all the interest on my mortgage becauseI have remortgaged twice when I previously got myself into trouble. I've got this part of my life sorted and now I am redundant, live alone, feeling totally overwhelmed with forms etc and frightened about losing my home I've lived in for almost 20 years.

Any advise will be gratefully received.

    Thank you.

Hi morningpearl, have you checked www.entitledto.com to see exactly what benefits you will be allowed? Re selling your home to a housing association, as above there is no guarantee that you will be the one allowed to rent it back, especially if it is a larger family home and you are living there on your own.

Do you have any close family or friends who would be prepared to move in with you and have the top floor of the house in return for sharing costs?

Do check exactly what benefits you will get as my mum has MS too and their mortgage payment is covered in full and also slightly overpaid each month.

Hope that you do find a solution and you can keep living in your home. best wishes, Donna.

morningpearl, wouldn't it be better to be in a flat? I know you will be attached to your house but think how much more freedom you would have if you were all on one level. With the drop in prices on flats you could probably get one at a bargain price too.

You might also want to check with your mortgage provider about a payment holiday. I believe that these are specifically for people who have lost their jobs and can last for up to two years. That would help out while you are getting back on your feet.

Sorry if my post wasnt clear Pearl.

There is a chance a HA will buy your home, but no chance that you will be the one to rent it back, priority for that will go to who is at the top of the list at the time.
